„One companion significant by his absence is Zeus. He never appears among Hera’s companions on the coins, nor is the goddess ever pictured as being carried by him, as is Artemis of Ephesus on some Ephesian coins. On the Samian coin images, Hera is occasionally carried by Tyche but never by Zeus. This absence is striking testimony that even in imperial times Zeus was not mythically prominent in the Samian Heraion. When he does appear on Samian coins, it is with Poseidon, not Hera. By contrast, the river god Imbrasos is present on many Samian coins, with Hera’s peacock and a cornucopia, hence as a fertility god. The numismatic evidence coupled with Hera’s title Imbrasié (Apollonius Rhodius 1.187), her legendary birth at the banks of the Imbrasos, and her binding to her tree by lugos branches there suggest the local river god may have been understood as her early Samian spouse.”
