So I just had a sad thought: like, I'm imagining Imelda and the family going through photo albums with Héctor once he's healed from his brush with the Final Death. He's learning all about his family and they're sharing funny stories, everyone is having a good time. Rosita shares embarrassing stories about her brother and Julio does the same. Óscar and Felipe tell Héctor about their crazy shoe inventions with their sister commenting every so often. Victoria tells her abuelito about her school days and the stupid things she and Elena would bicker about from time to time.
But then
Héctor sees pictures of Imelda and Coco. He sees Coco as a young woman at her quinceañera, at her wedding with her husband, holding her daughters. How she smiles through all of them but, with a slight sadness in her eyes. He sees Imelda age through the photos without him but, she still looks beautiful even with wrinkles and grey streaks in her hair. Still the proud and passionate woman he fell in love with over a hundred years ago. Héctor has to look away or else he's going to break down.
But then
He spots a more current picture of Coco still in the living world, sitting next to the last photo he took with his family with his face ripped out. He gets up slowly, everyone around him falls silent but, he doesn't notice. He heads to his daughter's photo, which is surrounded by portraits of both living and dead family, and picks it up. She's an old woman with many more wrinkles than Imelda had, with white hair still in twin her braids, and bound in a wheelchair but, she's still his little girl. He still recognizes her smile. And then he finally breaks down as he sees how long it's been since he's seen his girl. How time has aged his daughter and wife but, stopped for him.
As the sobs shake his frame, he barely registers Imelda's hand on his back and he turns into her embrace while the rest of their family looks on quietly.
