#tbt Just me #unfiltered in the golden hour light on Lunar New Year. ☀️🧧 The Oscars are this weekend & after talking about the nominees w/friends, I’m upset again that a movie as wonderfully scripted & poignantly acted as @thefarewell was shut out of the Oscars race, not to mention treated as a foreign film often this awards season when it is American. The story is an Asian-American diaspora experience & the beauty of it is its cultural specificity yet universal themes (familial love, grief, celebration, regret, etc). It just drives home to me 2 things: 1) the continued need for Immigrant/The Struggle stories (bc somehow people still don’t get that immigrant diaspora stories are American(new homeland) stories) AND fresh & contemporary AsianAm stories. ☀️🌿☀️ 2) the importance of telling our own stories & raising them up. Allies are great & necessary, but the fact is we need to champion our causes, our stories, our art. No one is going to make space for us if we don’t make space ourselves. So thank you @thumbelulu for taking up space with this moving & personal movie. I laughed, I cried, I hugged my Nai Nai. 💗💗💗 For anyone who hasn’t seen The Farewell or was hesitant, don’t be.
