He doesn’t know how it started, he doesn’t know why he does it, but the simple fact is that he does.

It’s not like it makes his life easier, like it’s easier to pay attention this way. In fact, most of the time it just makes him more distracted, he has to tilt his notebook at a weird angle so he can write, his handwriting has become atrocious, but he still does it.

Every morning, as soon as he arrives at Mr. Mathews’ classroom, before anyone else is there, Lucas Friar moves his desk forward, closer to the back of Maya Hart’s chair.

He has it down to an art now, knows exactly how to do it with one single push, hitting the right spot, how to do it fast enough that no one notices, and how to lift his chair just enough to make it catch up with his desk.

He has been doing it for almost 2 years now, and he has never been caught… yet.

“What are you doing?” Maya asked from the door, making him jump. She loved that even though he was almost a foot taller than her, she – the short, little stack of pancakes - could make him jump.
