† - I request Elerman singing Kate to sleep. CRY OVER IT. CRY HARD.
“What are you doing awake at this hour.”
The little girl almost immediately latched onto the towering closet monster, fearless of his inky black form and the slithering shadows he was comprised of.Nightmares, he assumed. Or thunder. Or whatever other blasted, trivial things human children tended to be afraid of. And she wasn’t letting go. That made it even more troublesome.
“…If you would kindly cease clutching to me like that, I could perhaps strike a deal, with you.”
Kate was a special case, he figured. This wasn’t the first time she’d done this to him, and it likely wouldn’t be the last.
With a sniffle, the girl stared up at him attentively, awaiting an explanation. He nearly cringed. She was so adorable that it stung, and he merely hoisted her up in his tentacles, cradling her close.
“If you lie still and go back to sleep, I will stay here with you. You needn’t worry either way, but…” He gently deposited her back into her bed, pulling the covers up and tucking them around her.
“…Could– uhm…could you sing something?”
Elerman shot a sidelong glance at her. “…Sing.”
“Like, a lullabye…?”
The monster deflated with a sigh, shoulders settling. He never much cared for singing. He had done it plenty of times before, but it always felt strange. He knew his voice never fit it well, too dark and deep to possibly send someone off to pleasant dreams. But, she seemed insistent, peering at him over the top of the covers.
Glancing away and retreating to the nearby, dark corner, he stood quiet for a moment, wracking his brain on something proper to sing.
“…I promised I would never leave you,And you should always know -Wherever you may go, no matter where you are,I never will be far away…”
She seemed happy enough with it, the low baritone of his voice making her eyelids droop, already. He paused, taking a moment to brush a small, stray lock of hair away from her brow.
“Goodnight, my angel,Now it’s time to sleep -And still so many things I want to say.Remember all the songs you sang for me,When we went sailing on an emerald bay…”
It had never meant to end, this way. She’d been strong. She was different than other humans, and to him, she was…
The wolpertinger gathered her up into his tentacles as he had, so many other times before. She was heavier now, a gasping, wheezing mess of gore, severed open in the middle, her round eyes glassy. Wendigos were horrible creatures. Relentless and violent. She had done so very well, but he had been just a moment too late. He shushed her, holding her close, squeezing her tight. It hurt. It twisted his stomach into an unpleasant knot, and he was perhaps angrier for the fact that it did not hurt him as much as it should have. He wanted to cry, to scream, to tell her how much he truly cared.
He had been her monster. She had been his child to protect. For all the years that had passed, nothing had ever changed.
“…And like a boat out on the ocean,I’m rocking you to sleep…The water’s dark and deep inside this ancient heart,You’ll always be a part…of me…”
