Monday, October 16: Immension, "The Father You Will Never Be"
Bullet for My Valentine may not have been the most original or acclaimed band, but they were inarguably one of the most popular metal groups of their era and played a substantial role in restoring the genre’s commercial viability. Therefore it shouldn’t be surprising that they proved to be a key influence for a subsequent generation of groups eager to blend traditional metal with thrash undercurrents, particularly in the UK, and Immension was one of said groups as “The Father You Will Never Be” was more than a bit BFMV in its styling and execution. To be sure, the track had a strong sense of dynamics and very effective chugging, and Jake Kearsley cleanly articulated his angst-ridden lyrics without sounding overly whiny (in this respect, Immension significantly improved upon their predecessors) even if the words practically demanded it. Everything was efficiently executed, and the arrangement showed a clear way with craft, but the hooks weren’t quite memorable enough to make the song jump out, rendering “The Father You Will Never Be” as something that was enjoyable enough while it played without leaving much of a mark afterwards.
