    Stuck in a safe house, Peter has NOWHERE he can go. He isn’t home anymore, he can’t go home again, not when his name is out there, not when he’s been framed as a CRIMINAL. He panicked initially, swinging to a rooftop to try and breathe right, and battling the voices in his head that SCREAMED at him about how no one is going to believe him. But eventually, he got together with Happy and May, and they were brought somewhere where they wouldn’t be harmed. It’s...difficult. The weight of loneliness and self blame pushes down on him, and he KNOWS if he just hadn’t fallen for Beck’s tricks, none of this would have ever happened. 

         It’s been days since he’s seen anyone that isn’t here, days since he’s even HEARD anything about what’s going on, considering he had to ditch his cell phone at risk of being tracked. But who he’s really worried about are his friends. The ones who knew Peter, who are no doubt being harassed and questioned. So the moment Peter gets ahold of a disposable phone, he knows what he has to do. His fingers are shaky as he dials Ned’s number ( he won’t believe you, he won’t believe you ), and slowly puts the phone to his ear. 

                                                 “H-hey, Ned?”

Cat doesn’t do formalities unless they’re tied in with trying to garner a particularly generous donation at a Gala. Even then, she hasn’t done them for a good decade because there’s no point playing politics in a Ring of Fire. The last time she bothered with a civility that didn’t start with ‘hey, you, why are you sitting there not getting coffee?’ was towards her mother and, ugh, why waste the time?

Her mother, speaking of, would likely never be caught dead here. Not, of course, because her mother is as pompous as she likes to seem, but because her mother cannot dance.

Fortunately for Cat Grant, that little annoyance skipped a generation.

Unfortunately for Cat Grant, it’s only skipped a generation, because the inability to find any hint of coordination with a limb has settled happily in her son’s lanky, growing appendages, that have more of a tendency to flop than...well, even bend. Her son, who is particularly nervous about a high school dance he, for once, intends on attending.

Which is how she finds herself knocking on the door for a business card slipped her way a decent enough amount of time ago (but, oh, Cat never forgets a face, or a useful contact), and when the door answers, doesn’t bother with the civility.

“How much for private lessons.”

Janis shook her head, ombre-blonde curls following the movements. She walked slowly beside her, arms holding the two textbooks Addy had previously struggled with carrying while getting to get back to her locker. She did crack a smile at the playful stab at Damien, who could completely be at fault, jokingly of course.

“Its no biggie, It’s what I’m here for.” She replied in an easygoing tone, smile still on her features as she glanced over to her friend. Not that it was her only motivation, but she wasn’t about to be ‘that asshole’ who wouldn't help her regardless of their friendship. It did however give Janis a reason to spend an extra few minutes with the pretty blonde, happy with just chit-chatting as they went.

Janis was sitting, glossy black boots up on the seats in front of her, as she bounced between scrolling on her phone and watching Damian practice for this semesters musical. Like a good, encouraging friend she shot thumbs up after a long stint on stage from the dramatic guy, and in that, gained the attention of a handful of others on stage. She was one of the only other students that wasn't part of production who was watching.

Some of the other students caught the artist’s attention too. Especially a cute and completely out-of-bounds girl who shared one of the leading roles with Damien. Janis was good at hiding things, including who she was attracted to since the middle school incident, but she was a emotionally driven teen after all, and that posed reactions that were out of her control.

After the practice, she moved to meet Damien backstage, but instead ran right into who she was softly making eyes at the entire practice, as she stepped on stage and around the curtain. “Oh-- sorry!” She stammered, meeting the blonde’s eyes as Janis gripped her bag strap from suddenly being thrust in front of the other’s attention.

Gulp-- chill out, this is totally fine, Janis. Well, maybe her cheeks were pink. Maybe she hoped Damien wouldn’t take so long this time ( and maybe, depending on how this goes, she hoped the opposite ). “I-Uh, Addison, right?” She continued, not wanting to stand there almost gaping like an idiot, as her free hand gestured along with her words. Totally not a nervous tick of hers.

         Peter wouldn’t hesitate for a MOMENT to protect his aunt. She’s the one person who matters the MOST to him in the whole world, she raised him, she’s been there for him his whole life, and he can’t lose her. He can’t let himself, he wouldn’t EVER forgive himself, especially after Ben. He’s already put her through so much, and she already does so much for him-- how could he NOT protect her with his life? Not only does he owe it to her in every single way, but he LOVES her, and he wouldn’t be able to live with himself is May was gone, and Peter could have stopped it. 

            Which is why he dives right in front of her when he hears the sound of the gunshot. 

  It’s off, he THINKS it was meant for someone else, the two of them unfortunately walking right into chaos, but the moment Peter gets a prickly feeling across his body, he KNOWS it’s heading right towards him. The shot rings through his ears, reverberating through the air, and Peter doesn’t hesitate for a MOMENT before shielding May with his body. He was right. It was heading straight towards them-- he figures it out the second he feels a piercing pain spread through his body. 

   He gasps, mouth falling open as his eyes go wide, before it really starts to kick in. A flash of pain BURNING through his body, the sensation all too much to bear as he clenches his teeth, trying to suppress the CRY of pain that still manages to wriggle its way out. Lightheaded and dizzy, he slumps forward, catching himself against her as tears sting his eyes and start to fall down his cheeks. “I’m-- I’m okay-” He mumbles, but he’s starting to bleed out, everything HURTS, and it takes everything in him to stop himself from screaming. “Had to-- to protect you-”

      Peter has always PROMISED himself he’d save as many people as he can. Logically, he knows it’s impossible to save everyone, but that’s always been incredibly difficult to grapple with. Ever since his uncle’s death, ever since the guilt and blame and sadness had festered inside of him, manifesting into a sheer need to do GOOD, because he needs to fulfill the responsibility of his powers, he’s wanted to save EVERYONE else. Maybe to possibly make up for that monumental loss, even though Peter knows he never could. Most importantly...he vowed to himself that he’d never let anyone else close to him suffer the same fate. 

                                             But he doesn’t have any control over that. 

   His identity out there now, BROADCASTED to the public and spread all around New York City, it puts a target on all of his friends. Peter feels incredibly guilty for it-- it’s HIS fault that the people he loves are in danger. But he hopes that things won’t get too bad-- he’s a HERO, despite how much the city might hate him, he can save them, right? 

      The sound of the gunshot rings through Peter’s ears, and he whips his head to the side, eyes WIDENING right away as he realizes what’s going on. The bullet was meant for Ned, someone obviously CLOSE to Spider-Man. Peter curses under his breath, heart pounding and blood pumping as he takes on the attacker as quick as he possibly can, before rushing right towards his best friend. “Ned-- Ned, hey-- Ned, can you hear me? Ned-- are you-- are you alright? You’re-- you’re gonna be fine, I’m-- I’m gonna fix this, just-- just DON’T die on me, alright?!”
