Hmm I always like to think Megatron and Starscream were actually good friends at first then everything just… fell apart. Back then Starscream always liked to perch on his leader, he was always the tallest in the room, could support his weight comfortably, and well the mech didn't mind the extra passenger. As things got worse between them the seeker started progressively perching on Megatron less and less until he stopped doing it entirely.

Megatron didn't even realize this until one day he called for Starscream and his little bird did not respond to him.

Nightbird believing the reason why Starscream doesn't seem to like her is because she thinks Starscream is in love with Megatron, and it could go both ways:

Either Starscream IS secretly in love with Megatron, validating Nightbird's theory or it could be the opposite that Starscream has become infatuated with her and doesn't want Megatron to get his servos on her and use her to offline him in the future.

Now I wanna make a fic about this.

Megatron slandering Starscream so badly in Earthspark is both tragic but also comical because imagine believing a genocidal warlord when he tells you that the person he had direct control over for the last millions of years and subjected to literal physical/mental abuse is somehow a worse person than he ever was.
