Mike’s Family
If you asked Mike nearly a year ago about his family, he’d tell you to buzz off.
His birth mother died when he was a kid and he only saw his birth dad a couple times a year since he left home 6 years ago. So family was a sore spot for him.
So what’s the difference between then and now? Well everyday he gets to wake up and be with his new family.
He has two little sisters. One sister is really shy and timid despite her large build. But is probably the greatest singer he knows! After himself of course. She also makes the best cakes and pies he knows(Her strawberry cheesecake, especially, is to die for) and always shares with everyone. He’s always careful with what he says around her as she’s so sensitive..... Usually. There have been incidents where he has lost patience with her or laughed when she made a mistake but usually makes amends before she gets too upset.
His other little sister is a bit tougher. With black boots and lots of spines, she’s the poster child of the phrase “rocker chick”…. or “Guttersnipe” as he likes to refer her to. While they often squabble and disagree on almost everything daily, he wouldn’t trade her for anything. But he’ll carry that to his grave before he admits that! He does like the rare times they team up. Like April 1st. Between her love for pranks and his love for the humiliation of others, it was a fun day. For them. Not so much everyone else. It resulted in a harsh lecture from the boss and cleaning up any messes made that day but they’ll always cherish “Prankmageddon”
He has a little brother who like him has a rocky past but unlike him, it hasn’t made him jaded to the world. The young gorilla was kinda like his sister in being innocent and sweet but more likely to speak his mind about what he believes in. In all honesty, he’s always wanted a younger brother to teach about girlfriends, card games and how to cheat without getting caught. He knows that the young gorilla isn’t usually paying attention when he is sharing advice(usually thinking about a certain female porcupine) but he pretends not to notice. He is however jealous of the leather jacket. Younger brothers aren’t supposed to be cooler than older brothers! It’s a rule!
He also has a big brother. He seems chilled and somewhat lazy…. And he sometimes is, but he always comes and gives 100% on helping out so everyone’s shows are a success. He’s a good listener and is usually the go-to guy if you need to vent about something. No matter what is said, the calm sheep never gets angry. At least not visibly. Sometimes big bro brings his N64 and they play Mario Kart or the original Smash Bros the rest of the family. They're both competitive beings so playing together gets intense really fast. The sheep is pretty cool but one thing he would change is maybe not catching him making out with the boss….. repeatedly….. At least it makes good blackmail!
His uncle is unique in every way. Flamboyant, eccentric and kinda ditzy. That would usually annoy him but he sometimes lets it slide as that’s how the pig works. The flamboyant pig brings a special energy to the Theatre which just makes everyone upbeat and work harder. Always giving out uplifting words of encouragement…… Even if you can’t always understand what he’s saying. He’s also a great costume maker. He once made Mike a gold suit and honestly, he was ready to hate it but it just looked great on him… (As it should). Nobody has ever made anything for him by hand. He now treasures the suit.
His Nonna is an odd woman. She has a glass eye which is just plain creepy honestly. She’s usually forgetful and makes mistakes but is overall a sweet old lady. She’s always telling stories about her past experiences. Some of the stories don’t make sense but he listens intently. Mike never knew his birth grandparents so this is all new to him. The elderly lizard makes great coffee when she remembers not to drink it…. or doesn’t drop her eye in it. But the best thing about her as far as Mike is concerned, is that she’s also a Sinatra fan. She’s even been to his live performances when he was alive! And has a signature from him.
Then there’s mom. She’s a kindly pig who is a motherly figure to all, which was needed all things considered. Someone to care about everyone and show unconditional love. Mike admires her non stop patience and compassion. Especially since she has 25 piglets at home so it’s really sweet she’d be a mom to people she doesn’t fully know. She’s also quite firm. She’s always making sure the youngest performers are doing their college work and that everyone gets along. She also has this scary “Mom Glare” that Mike has seen a few more times than he would have cared for when he’s gone over the top with insults or got caught in a lie. All in all, the female pig is nice yet firm when needed. And also makes a great cheesy lasagne.
Dad….. Oh dad. Despite only being 7 years older than Mike, he considers his boss a somewhat father figure. From day one he’s noticed his amazing voice and natural charm which is more than anyone else did in the last few years. He’s always cheering everyone on making sure they do their best. He’s tender with the younger ones and is ever so patient with everyone. He is sometimes embarrassing though. He’s usually caught singing and dancing along to the cheesiest pop songs in history! And just last week he tried dabbing! Everyone groaned! Honestly…. the koala is amazing. Silly, crafty, funny, loyal and full of love and pride.
Then there’s his beloved Nancy. His light. His sweetheart. The girl he hopes to one day bend down on one knee to and make him a honest mouse. What started as a fling turned into true love. She saved him from being Bear food, hid out with him in Hawaii for almost 2 months and convinced him to make things right with everyone at the theatre. He wouldn’t be here now without her and he’s eternally grateful for that. Nancy may seem dainty and vain but she’s really smart and down to earth. She’s also not afraid to keep Mike in line. Usually with a good twist of his ear if she catches him being particularly rude….. Which is often…… But she does it to make him a better mouse.
When Mike thinks about it, he thinks it’s sort of odd how his family cane together. They were initially brought together with desire for potential fame and $100,000 and nothing more (We’ll for him at least). They were strangers at first and he didn’t care for them. It was the prospect of never seeing them again by either death or being thousands of miles away that started to open his heart. He was expecting them to turn him away when he returned from Hawaii and wouldn’t blame him. It was kinda his fault that the Theatre flooded and Buster almost lost everything. Not to mention as far as everyone knew, he just disappeared half way through Meena’s song. He doesn’t show it but he’s so grateful they gave him another chance.
“Mike? Mike!”
His musings were interrupted by a sharp yell!
“Mike. Are you ready to practice for the show next week?” “Oh! Oh sure, Mr. Moon. I’m coming. I shouldn’t keep my natural talent to myself anyway.”
As he walks up to the stage he sees his family mostly ready and waiting.
“Took you long enough you Cranky Crooner. I was almost expecting a quiet day” “Up yours, Spines! You know you love me” “As if!” “Alright! Let’s not start another argument” the Koala intervenes “We have a lot to work to do so let’s get started. And please get along today” “No promises” the porcupine and mouse both said at the same time…… And then both burst out laughing
That was a typical morning for Mike. Getting into a small fight with the porcupine and then the Koala or the motherly pig having to break it up. Then they work hard until lunch when someone usually brings in a treat and they usually share stories. Then more practice for shows, maybe do something for the Theatre Blog then get into another argument with the porcupine or someone else then call it a day to return to his beloved.
It’s predictable, mundane and gets into dumb fights with teens who don’t know real music!
But he wouldn’t trade it for anything!
