When Madonna returned to the studio in 2000 to record Music, she had a choice to make - would she continue the partnership with William Orbit that had resulted in the acclaimed Ray Of Light, essentially repeating herself, or would she try something new, and risk losing the commercial and critical credibility she had just regained? A lesser artist would have stuck to the formula, Madonna, of course, did not. Orbit stuck around for a couple of album tracks, but the majority of Music, including its two biggest singles, was produced by Madonna and Mirwais Ahmadzaï, a French artist who specialised in adventurous, futuristic electronica. Madonna and Mirwais would work together on three of her albums, but no song demonstrates the strange magic - and madness - of their partnership better than the very first track they worked on together: ‘Impressive Instant’.

‘Impressive Instant’ is unlike anything Madonna had ever recorded. To this day, she has never again sounded as wilfully odd as she does here - the track is a deconstruction of her voice, of her most common themes as a writer (love at first sight, metaphysical poetry, the power of dance), and of electronic music itself. Madonna’s voice swirls around one of the deepest beats in her catalogue, being pitch-shifted in and out of recognition, never staying in one place long enough to sound anything close to conventional. When she confides in us that she likes to singy, singy, singy like a bird on a wingy, wingy, wingy, she has never sounded more at peace with her own eccentricities.

When the time came to choose a fourth single from Music, Madonna pushed for ‘Impressive Instant’ - she could do anything she wanted at this point, so why not? Warner Bros. disagreed, and wanted to release the Orbit collaboration ‘Amazing’ instead. ‘Amazing’ is a fun track, and would have been a decent hit, but Madonna felt - rightfully - that the song would be seen as a retread of her 1999 smash ‘Beautiful Stranger’. ‘Impressive Instant’ eventually received a promo release, which took it to number one on the US dance charts, but Warner Bros. was insistent on releasing ‘Amazing’ with or without Madonna’s assistance. The record company planned to promote the track with a live performance recorded on the Drowned World Tour in place of a music video, but when Madonna got wind of this plan, she swiftly removed ‘Amazing’ from the tour setlist, and Warner Bros. had no choice but to give up. The move was a fabulous show of nerve on Madonna’s part, and it also displays her belief in ‘Impressive Instant’ - even if, in the end, neither Madonna nor Warner Bros. won, it was a track that was worth fighting for.
