yesterday (july 6, 2020), I.C.E. legislation was passed regarding international students in the united states.
main points include:
nonimmigrant F-1 and M-1 visa holding students attending institutions that are completely online must leave the US or transfer to a school with in-person instruction.
visas will not be issued to students attending online-only schools.
nonimmigrant F-1 students attending “hybrid” schools must stay at that institution unless it goes completely online - in which they must follow the regulations above.
legislation essentially states:
deportation will proceed if individuals continue to stay
students enrolled in in-person instruction colleges are only eligible to enroll in one online class
if an institution’s instruction method changes for any reason, the affected students have 10 days to leave the country or transfer to a school offering in person classes
bottom line: many international students, amidst coronavirus regulations, are about to get displaced. students will have to risk their health and safety in order to either continue attending their institution or to go home.
