Ranjha Ranjha Kardi
When Noori said: Tujhe apni jaan pyari nhi hai?
And Bhola replied: Jaan pyari hai, Jaan to sab ko pyari hoti hai, lekin tu jaan se bhi Ziyada Pyari hai.
Something in me stirs.
Khuda kare tumhe bhi kisi se pyaar ho aur woh tumhe na mile. Khuda kare tum bhi uske liye pal pal tarapo, jalo, maro; magar woh tumhari dastar se bahar ho. Khuda kare tumhare armaano ka khoon bhi meri tarhan tumhari saij par ho. K h u d a k a r e. - {Raqs e Bismil - Dance of the Wounded}
Iqra Aziz in Ranjha Ranjha Kardi as Noor Bano/Noori is a once in a lifetime character and Iqra took the role by the scruff of the neck and has shown what acting is all about. It’s about letting go of inhibitions and not looking at a character from outside but looking at the world from within it. What other current actresses would have taken on the character of a girl who comes from a family of rubbish collectors (chaprasi/kuray-waley) and played her with such rawness? She didn’t look like some dressed up, flighty young girl. She had dreams and aspirations and a girl hardened by her surroundings with both feet on the ground and wings ready to take her anywhere she wanted to go. Those wings were made of self belief and determination. She craved love and respect and when she loved it was so fierce and pure, not many around her were deserving of it. Noor Bano is perhaps up there with the best of female characters written in Pakistani dramas, up there with Kashaf from Zindagi Gulzar Hai. So raw, relatable, and strong. This is not to make a comparison between the two as they are hugely distinct characters, but both tremendous women so so well fleshed out by the respective writers and the actresses having performed the hell out of them. When a character’s sadness makes your heart ache and their joy has you smiling from cheek to cheek and they make you feel every emotion on the spectrum, that is a triumph lying at the feet of the team.
