Idk if you've seen it but there's a post going around that's like "mom, dad I'm cis aromantic heterosexual pls don't kick me out" and idk it rubbed me the wrong way cause it was condescending and invalidating to aro people? and I dunno what are your thoughts?
I haven’t seen it. Glad to know I’m following some great people.
I do think it’s fairly insulting. And I’m sure the OP made that as a comparison to other members of the LGBT+ community in order to be like “haha aros dont have it bad at all look how bad WE have it” which honestly isn’t fair. Aros aren’t the ones who made it a competition. Everyone who is trying to keep non-sga aros out of LGBTQ spaces are the ones who made it a competition.
Moreover, it is very invalidating. You don’t know what anyone’s home life is like. I’ve never presumed to have the same issues as someone who is SGA, but that’s because that’s what I’ve experienced individually. I DO know aros who have been kicked out just for being aro, regardless of whether they were SGA or not. I know aros who have been put in corrective therapy and on hormones. I know aros who have experienced corrective rape because they were “broken”. None of this takes away from the terrible things that happen to SGA people everyday. So why are they trying to take it away from us?
It’s not a misery competition. And if you’re invalidating someone’s identity just because they don’t “suffer” enough, then you’re no better than anyone else who gatekeeps anyone from the community.
You’re no better than the people who claim that bisexual people dating another gender grants them the concept of “straight passing” or somehow makes them “less oppressed”.
No one has to invalidate anyone else’s identity.
So I wouldn’t give that post any truck, and I’d unfollow anyone you see reblogging it.
Het attracted aros aren’t the ones that are a problem. We’ve never purported anything other than “hey, we’re aromantic, so we belong in the LGBTQ+ community under the A for asexual/aromantic. Please give us our space”
Anyone who is trying to argue against that is clearly too insecure themselves to be anyone who is worth giving the time to, and it’s not worth giving them the attention they desperately seem to be seeking.
Aros don’t need anyone to validate them. They are who they are, SGA or not, and no one else’s ignorance can take that away from them.
