'Blue Jay' in acrylics on canvas
Landscape in oils on canvas
'Sunset on the Beach' in acrylics on canvas
Snowman Christmas card in acrylics on paper
These ones were a lot easier to date because I'd written the dates on 'Blue Jay' and 'Sunset on the Beach,' and my current sketchbook started at August 2006. I definitely improved a lot that year. That was a very dark and lonely year for me, at age nine or ten, and I became very nervous and self-conscious, which in turn led me to become a perfectionist. I guess I focused more on my art than on the people around me.
I painted 'Blue Jay' for my mother for her birthday. In retrospect, it was kind of awful for me to give this to only her and not my father as well, because their birthdays are three days apart.
I'm not exactly sure when I finished the landscape, but I vaguely remember it being a June, and my signature on it matches my signatures on other pieces that year.
'Sunset on the Beach' was the first drawing from my current sketchbook that I worked up. The back of the canvas says I finished it on 9/23/06. I also signed the front in red pen, but it's pretty hard to read.
The Christmas card was done in less than a single lesson, which means I took less than an hour to finish it. My teacher was impressed at how fast I was, but now I'm actually a very slow worker. I think this started that year, actually, because very meticulous with my art due to my perfectionism.
Mother and daughter in watercolors on paper
Still life in charcoal
Path and barn in watercolors
Standing mannequin in pencil
Yellow elephant with red flowers in gouache
I'm not completely sure around when I drew some of these, but I think they were also from 2005, age eight or nine. My lines were definitely getting less heavy.
I remember I hated that porcelain elephant. I thought it was ugly, but my teacher told me to draw it anyway. I added the tree with falling flowers because I didn't understand why the elephant would be covered in flowers any other way.
Doe in acrylics on paper
Hare and squirrel in watercolors on paper
Lighthouse at sunset in watercolors on paper
Sleeping cat in watercolor pencils on paper
Bird in watercolors on paper
I'm pretty sure these were from 2005, so I was eight or nine. My teacher had been trying to make me stop choking up on the pencil, so she made me hold the end of the pencil. I didn't have much control over it at first, but I was getting better. Now I sometimes find myself holding the end of the pencil with a lot of control.
Still life with lemons in colored pencils on paper
Flamingo in acrylics on paper
Dolphins in acrylics on paper
Fish in watercolors on paper
Dog on Christmas in watercolors on paper
The only date I have to go by is the one on the fish picture, but I'm guessing the rest of them were from the same year, 2004, judging by the heavy lines and the skill level and the memory that I made these around the beginning of my time with my teacher. I was seven or eight back then.
Click on them to see them in their actual dimensions. The scanner cut them off a little, but I don't think it matters much since these are so old.
Bonus, this was on the back of the dolphins painting:
