Magician of the Century: A novel

A magician-for-hire that goes around the country and performs at parties for all ages.

However, she’s the elusive assassin called the “Magician of the Century.” Her real goal is to target the beats that take human form. 

The beats are creatures that dwell in the negative emotions of humans, and when the emotion reaches its highest point, it takes over the host body. In the host body, the beast turns the person’s life around--making them happy, popular, charismatic, attractive, and have lots of friends who like sticking around them.

It takes two months for the beast to completely devour the host body from the inside out, and when that is done, the beast can burst out of the body in its true form and eat. 

Before this happens, the beast usually throws some kind of extravagant party to lure its prey together so that when it awakens, it has a large feast to eat. 

It’s the magician’s job to put a stop to this beast using every magic trick up her sleeve.

Rules

When a pawn dies, a new one is “created” brand free. The Queens and Kings must fight over it to be able to brand it. Though it is possible for the pawn to fall under the command of another piece as it must have order from a higher piece than it to continue living, it will not be branded and can be stolen if a brand is attached to it.

The other pieces (besides Kings and Queens) can be recreated if they were destroyed, but it is a much harder task to create a higher piece.

The higher level a piece is has no effect on the level of power.

A King or Queen will have no other power except to control other pieces since they cannot be created. They must pass down their title to someone else after when their powers start to dwindle. When it is gone, they will disappear and the heir will receive the title of the new King or Queen.

A piece can increase power by being used in winning battles or destroying other pieces. The Grandmaster can only make more powerful weapons if they win a battle; losing battles will physically weaken the GM.

Pieces

Grandmaster - A person who holds power over one of the “pieces.” More commonly referred to as masters, or simply puppeteers/wielders for their ability to “move the pieces behind the scenes while overlooking the board.” They have a few special powers.

King/Queen - These are special pieces because they can be either humans or pieces themselves. Their power outside of the game is to materialize weapons. They can control another piece only if they brand it. Their eyes will change to the color of the faction they control.

The Pieces:

Rook [4] - Level 1 - Abilities favor defense/enfeeblement.

Bishops [4] - Level 2 - Abilities  favor front assault.

Knight [4] - Level 2 - Abilities favor enhancing self.

Pawns [16] - Level 3 - Mindless dolls. They serve under their distinct Queen or King that has branded them. Their power is to copy any ability that they’ve had used on them.

6. What does your magic influence? How is it used in the world? Only for fighting or helping to create/use technology to advance the cities around the world?

Magic influences the environment. Sometimes if enough people use a certain type of magic, the environment can shift (ex: using a lot of water from a watery environment could cause a drought). This requires a LOT of particles being taken to have large consequences. Most are subtle shifts in the environment.

Most magic is used for warfare, since it’s impractical to use it in daily lives. 

Elemental magic is usually used for small tasks (such as lighting a candle with fire, etc), but is mainly used for warfare. 

As is defense magic, whose only purpose was created as a method of such. 

Healing magic is rounded, used for healing fighters, but its main purpose was to help the sick and suffering who couldn’t afford pricey hospitals. Healers usually travel very often to extend their reach and teachings to all different kinds of places.

Infusion magic is a selected art, 

Since magic is hard to use and one would have to go to school to learn how to control it properly, most people don’t use magic to advance technology and help them in their lives. People who know magic are either important figureheads (such as kings, etc) or the students of military fighting schools.

7. What loopholes/exceptions are there for your magic?

Since magic is conducted through the body and holds to the limitations of said body, if someone’s body doesn’t follow the regular rules of exhaustion (such as Carter), they have a potential for almost unlimited power.

8. What kinds of magic are there (ex: arcane, mystical, natural, etc.)? How are these different from each other?

A note on elemental magic:

People are born with a natural element that is easy for them to use compared to the rest of the people. Casters can only master one element, and that is the element they are most proficient with. They can learn other elements, but they will be nowhere as powerful as they are with the mastered element.

Types of magic

Black magic - Magic that has been banned

illusionary magic: Can create illusions in someone’s head by projecting the magic particles inside of someone else’s head instead of outside of the body.

Necromancy magic: Can raise the dead by moving the elemental particles into the body and using the particles to move the body at their command, esentially creating mindless puppets.

Curse magic: (even possible?)

Restricting magic: Magic that restricts actions (blind, pain, silence, etc)

Healing magic - Uses the same basis as elemental magic. Using the natural particles found in the skin, a healer can speed up the healing process and save someone from a fatal wound.

Familiar magic - Not a magic of its own, but this allows casters to bind their soul to a willing creature by forming a soul pact.

Summon magic - Can create an elemental creature made of a certain element to attack. This requires the caster to move the particles (or summon them, but this takes a highly skilled caster and a lot of energy) and create an image in their minds for the matter to shape into. They can move the creature by using the skill of moving the particles to animate the body.

Elemental magic - Using elemental particles to create attacks. There are five natural elements and one element that needs to be created: lighting, by using both fire and air particles.

Defensive magic - Using the elemental particles to create shields/armor/barriers around selected targets. Each element has a different property.

Air: Slow attacks in range

Fire: damage attacks in range (it wouldn’t stop metal, but it could stop a lesser water attack by creating steam when the water hit it, or burn someone if they went close to the field)

Water: ??

Lighting: ??

Ice: creates a barrier around the target

Earth: creates a hardened surface around the summoner’s body similar to armor that’s hard to break through

Infusing magic - infuse the elemental particles to give objects an elemental property. These casters take the element particle and infuse it together with the particles that make up the object to bestow an elemental property.

They can also infuse souls into objects (ie. demon sword), but soul infusion is considered “black magic” and is not taught/looked well upon for anyone known to use it.

Note: An elemental particle by itself is nothing more than matter being moved or crafted into something else.
