Tove analysed the war in depth and in very critical terms. Within the Church and among religious believers the war was frequently seen as God’s punishment for the sins of mankind. It was thought that God sent the war and that only He could take it away, that it was the wages of sin, the penance imposed on the wicked. Tove wrote to her friend the artist Ina Colliander about this in categorical and rather heated terms:

I’ve been thinking about what you wrote about how God sends war, pestilence etc., in order to try us. That it’s something we need. But I don’t think you are right. The war is a condensation of all our own wickedness - not something He has given us. Free will, that is what He has given us. One can see it! I have often prayed that Peo would come back, but never for victory, not even for the war to end. The way I see it, God has nothing to do with our war, even though He may protect individuals. We must eat our own shit, as the Chinese say. But do you really think we are better for it? On the contrary - all I have seen these past years is increasing hardness, meanness, hatefulness, bitterness, selfishness. War is so thoroughly negative that it cannot give rise to anything good. [...] There may be those who rise up from the mess purified, praising the Lord - but alas, I haven’t seen them.
