Inauguration Day
George Washington raised his right hand and took the oath of office on April 30, 1789, in New York City, the nation’s first capital.
Thereafter, Inauguration Day was March 4 — until 1933, when Congress changed the date to Jan. 20 to speed up the start of the new term.
