WHISPER 

The installation Whisper is based on a concept about the spreading of secrets done so through the action of whispering. The goal is to create a visualization of a whisper using a configuration. The cylinder shape is a special design full of small gold vertically oriented disks. The play of light on this piece is important in determining the visuals the audience will see.

The concept was born three years ago when reflecting on the 'human behaviour; I realized that you will never know entirely another human being; each of us shows only a part of ourselves to the outside world but the one thing that could reveal who we are for real are our secrets. A secret is a thing or a fact that you keep hidden within yourself and do not reveal to anyone. It can remain so only if not pronounced, when it is revealed it changes unconditionally and it loses its essence and characteristic feature. For this reason the concept is to whisper a secret and not to reveal it, the sound of a whisper makes indistinguishable the words and therefore, cannot be heard, but maybe it can be seen.

The gold coloured cylindrical elements of the structure reflect light and create a choreography with the lights, around the place, corresponding to the sound wave emitted by the microphone. “Whisper” is a sculpture which allows you to see the whispering of a secret without hearing it, and therefore allowing the secret to keep its most important feature, not to be revealed.

The realization

At the beginning of the project I imagined "whisper" as a wall of metal disks driven by a blower following the variables coordinates. As time went through, the project changed shape completely, due to the production method and also the concept engines.

The initial step was to try to have a clear image of how I wanted it to look like, and then sort out the materials to be used and choose the appropriate size of the sculpture. The first hurdle was to find a way to support the metal disks without blocking the air, twirling them on themselves and make sure that the flowed air does not move them and so make them overlap. So I decided to create a metal frame and hang the disks from it through metal rings, so that they could rise with the air and do not rotate. To eliminate the problem of overlapping I created cracks in the metal structure acting as guides for the rings. After calculating the distance between the various disks and then created 5 metallic identical circles and mounted diskettes through rings, the second big problem showed up: How to hold the 5 metallic circles without obstructing the air. With the help of Jan Vormann I came to the conclusion that I should create a structure based on three vertical supports that fit perfectly with the 5 circles structure.

Another challenge was to create the basis for the two engines, creating an unique structure that would allow for either one to turn 360 degrees and the other to support and vertically move the hair dryer (which Was used like a blower). After finding the best solution for the motors holder, I had to modify the hair dryer to change shape and make it look better in order to be suitable for the installation. At this point the structure was finished, but one of the most important things was missing, the code for make it work. Here I had to simplify the concept and take away the part with everything related to the live sound directions. The concept was kind of the same but without the interaction of the viewer. Steffen helped me a lot making it on time and would have been impossible to do it alone.

The exhibition

The setting up of “Whisper” took me some time due to putting all the elements together, fixing the code directly on the site and repairing some parts of it which were broken. In my opinion the exhibition was a success. It was my first exhibition ever and I learned more about this world. Making the project and curating the marketing of the event wasn’t easy. I figured out only after the work was finished how many things I could have done better if I only knew from the beginning what I know now.
