arthur and eames organization headcanons

contrary to popular belief, arthur is actually incredibly messy and disorganized at home and in his personal life because hes great at comparmentalizing and that means all the order and neatness stays at work. hes got his little moleskins but those notes are incomprehensible to anyone but him. he's been living out of his suitcase and hotels while following cobb around so he actually likes his home to feel homely and not another sterile impersonal hotel room. he is obsessive about having all the information but that means he has to go through a lot of paperwork and needs like 5 different desks stacked with notes, maps, computers, and boards (he loves a good board). somehow he knows where everything is even though its all a mess. the way he sees it, his mind can be neat because he dumps out all the mess to be organized in the real world. the only thing organized are outside clothes but when he gets home he just grabs a tshirt and shorts from a pile and calls it a day

eames on the other hand is a devout konmari method follower. his home and spaces are neatly organized where everything has a proper place to go. he's a forger, an artist, a schemer, and with that many hats to wear, he needs everything to be neatly cataloged. mess is absolutely counterintuitive for his process and his attention to detail means he's able to discern when anything is off from his neatly organized system. he's a planner and a creative so he actually enjoys cleaning and organizing. he has a forging space and of course a beautiful vanity with mirrors from all angles (to see all corners and exits of the rooms too of course), a work out area, all his books are carefully arranged by author and genre, his art studio space has tiny little drawers where all materials are stored properly so he doesn't have to waste time finding anything. he travels light because he knows exactly what he needs. he does like to buy weird trinkets from all his travels for funsies, but they're all carefully curated to fit his space. at heart, he likes being confident in his own home and being assured that its made for him and that everything has a purpose. his lazy light hearted attitude in dreamsharing in itself is just another act because it gets people to underestimate his abilities which has always benefited him since people will put their guard down around him.

this of course means eames is absolutely aghast at the state of arthur's home when he first visits (though he's kind about it...maybe), and arthur is befuddled because obviously his place could not be as incomprehensible of a mess as someone like eames' would be (hes wrong) and they have to have a Talk because eames actually for the first 4 months of their relationship thought arthur was insulting him by saying he brought him home and still witholding his actual house from him still and keeps asking "when are you goin to bring me to your REAL house though"

We are DEFINITELY in agreement about Arthur not being able to cook. I'm curious as to your thoughts on his coffee habits though! I vacillate between "he's very particular about his coffee and will only drink it if it's high quality and properly brewed" and "despite everyone assuming he's a coffee snob he lives primarily off of shitty instant coffee, much to Eames' abject horror" (I feel like Eames falls somewhere in the middle - not a snob, but he still wants it to be good quality)

Honestly I shift around about his coffee habits a lot, but that’s because I wonder whether or not to self project myself onto him 😂

I think that there’s 3 ways you can go about this,

1. He drinks coffee only made by himself (and then Eames because you have to know what kind your husband likes) because according to his experience, he’s the only one (and then Eames) who can make it properly (<- self projection). Whether it’s instant plain coffee, or the beans grounded by himself.

2. He’s really just fine with any coffee at all as long as he gets it. (Once Eames have give 6 teaspoons of sugar to mess with him and he drank it all and broke him.)

3. He actually doesn’t drink coffee at all. People think he’s only able to function on coffee but truth is he’ll only drink like ,, frappes and stuff. As a treat. (This one’s pretty fun to play around with if he doesn’t tell anyone and they bring it to him and he goes :)oh:)wonderful. Thank you:) I will:) drink this:) and then quietly dumps it somewhere)

OBVIOUSLY i need to know your thoughts on established arthur x eames relationship. 1) who's the cook? 2) who makes the bed, and 3) who's the early riser, and does he make breakfast or just get last night's leftovers and calls it a morning

I LOVE ESTABLISHED ARTHUR X EAMES. If you see me just vibrating at a high frequency, I’m probably thinking about them. These are my penny thoughts:

1. I’ve yelled this to anyone in range and into the abyss but Arthur can’t cook. I have a whole meme thread about me inputting this into a fic on the discord server and I love it. 

I was actually just talking to Agnes about it, too, and she brought up a really good take “Arthur is great if you need someone to taste-test your food (he can tell you what's missing and the almost exact amount you need to add) but God, he can't cook” love that. I also said that Eames is immune to lots of poisons now but he has one (1) egg made by Arthur and he can’t out of bed for three days adskjhkadf [EDIT: He can bake tho. As a treat.]

2. They both make the bed! I’m a big fan of chore domesticity where they work together, so they make the bed depending. On Arthur’s job/rough days, Eames does it, and vice versa. Sometimes they do it together. Sometimes they keep messing it up because-.

3. Eames is the early riser! Sometimes he’s up early, but even on days he’s not, Arthur’s just ,,, still sleeping. He’ll occasionally make a really good breakfast in bed for the both of them, or he’ll do a simple one and Arthur’s still going to go crazy about them because he thinks they’re all amazing.

Arthur is just now learning how to make eggs without making it super salty/peppery burning the house down. But he’s learning :’) so if Eames has the energy to make sure that their kitchen doesn’t explode, he’ll try to teach Arthur more breakfast items.

It was 23:16 when Eames dialed Arthur’s number on some highway between Nevada and California, knowing already that Arthur wouldn’t be asleep at this hour which forced him to wait patiently for the man to pick up his phone as soon as possible. After three rings, a cracking noise resonated in the silence of the car, and the low voice of Arthur emerged from the device.

“Eames? What’s wrong?” Asked Arthur, who knew full well that it was one of Eames’ private numbers he only used in emergencies. “Eames?” He called again some seconds later, and Eames realized that a big lump in the back of his throat had formed. He tried to swallow his saliva and answered back at his turn.

“Darling!” He replied with a hoarse voice. “What’s up? What’re you doing at this hour?

-Well... I’m in my car...” Said Arthur with a touch of perplexity in his voice. “I couldn’t sleep so I decided to take a ride, and now I’m probably gonna do some groceries. I thought I’d buy some wine for tonight, what do you say about that?”

Eames chuckled lightly and pushed up his sleeves, letting his big hands tapping on the wheel, the stress beginning to make him hot and overwhelmed.

“That’d be lovely dear!”

A big silence followed this last statement, and Eames wondered if Arthur would blame him, later, after all that. Then, he heard his friend clear his throat,

“So, are you on the road?” Asked Arthur. “Will you be here soon? I might as well come home, I wouldn’t want you to get in while I’m not here, it would be quite sad for you.” Babbled Arthur, and Eames knew that he was probably worried. Usually, it was Eames who was doing the animation, cheering his lover in his periods of insomnia as best as he could.

“You remember that I was working for some Russian guy love, do you?”

The topic of work brought tension in the conversation, and Eames knew that Arthur had understood the importance of this call.

“Y-yeah I do... I even made some research on the team you were working with. Why Eames?” 

It was so hot in this car, but Eames didn’t want to open the window, the necessity to hear every word pronounced by Arthur more important than the need of fresh hair.

“It’s just...” He swallowed hard and felt the lump in his throat growing bigger. “We didn’t succeed to extract what we had to, so the Russians weren’t really happy about that!” A strangled laugh fell from his mouth, and his eyes were beginning to sting. “I-I thought I’d be here in time, but there isn’t any time left Arthur.” And he couldn’t help his voice to crack on the last word, feeling now the wetness on his left cheek produced by a single fallen tear.

The use of his first name apparently helped Arthur to realize how grave the situation was, because Eames clearly heard a chocking sound on the other side of the line.

“What do you mean Eames? Please, tell me what happened! Do you need help?” Arthur nearly shouted, but Eames knew that he was trying to enter his pro mode, and now Arthur’s inner fight would be to stay as calm as possible.

“Well it’s just...” started Eames, trying to explain in a few words that each member of his last team were already dead, and that Eames wasn’t a fool to believe that while he stayed on the American ground he would never be safe for a moment. “I love you more than you think I do. Like, even myself I don’t know how to explain the way I feel about you... It’s crazy you’re just...” How could he reveal the fact that he was now followed by a car full of russians, and that one of them was currently aiming a rocket launcher at his black Ford. “You’re just my everything Arthur Levine, and it’ll stay this way forever. I’ll always be with you love, don’t ever forget that...”

“What the fuck Eames?” the pro mode was slipping, Arthur was panicking. “What’s happening, please, answer me...”

Eames checked his watch and didn’t even try to hold the tears that were now freely cascading on his stubbly cheeks. 

“Time isn’t in our favor pet, please forgive me. I didn’t think it’d happen so quickly... Bloody hell I’m so stupid!” The fear started to make its way in his stomach, and Eames couldn’t stop the words, because he realized again and again that they would be his last ones. “Oh dear god I’m so sorry Arthur, please forgive me.” He would never see Arthur’s dimples or hear his daft laugh again. “I’ll always love you darling.”

“I love you too! Oh Eames I love you so much, it’s gonna be fine, I’m coming I’ll help you I swear but please don’t leave me Eames...”

His husband sounded so desperate and he couldn’t fathom the fact that it was the end. 

“I’m gonna hang up Arthur, it might be easier... I love you. 

-What? No Eames, no don’t do tha-”

The last word was cut off at 23:20 by the sound of a detonation, and Eames took a deep breath. He sticked his eyes on the rearview mirror and all he could see was the face of his spouse seated in the backseat of the car, a little smile playing on his lips while the deafening sound of the explosion echoed all over the highway between Nevada and California.
