Hey this is Andrea Vazquez coming to to you with one of Christopher Nolan’s greatest hits, coming in with 34 winning nominations, "Inception".
"Inception" is sci-fi-action film directed and written by Christopher Nolan in 2010. This is exciting because Nolan is known for digging deep into the realms of science fiction. He takes simple ideas like dreaming and creates these phenomenal narratives leaving the audience with unexpected twists. Nolan successfully leaves the job to the viewer when it comes to perspective and makes the impossible seem possible through the production of cinematography. So why are we still not talking about it?
"Inception" is based on the idea of lucid dreaming, in this case a dream with in a dream. Just like Cobb, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, you the viewer will also question what reality is. Cobb’s job is to steal secrets from the minds of powerful people in the business industry. In one case, Cobb is put to the test for a more dangerous job, also known as "Inception". In exchange for a clean criminal record to see his children; Cobb’s mission is to implant an idea, which requires deeper levels to a dream. Even with the help of a totem it will become a challenge for Cobb’s team to distinguish reality from the dream state, especially for Cobb since he has experimented with the world of dreaming.
Personally I’m a fan of this film for its originality, the production process and for its complexity that makes us say,” Wait, what?” This film was made for viewers to be engaged as they follow the rapid pace of this 3 hour film. When I first watched this film in 2016, my friend warned me about getting lost and after a few watches I understood more. I don’t recall much besides being confused and curious about the ending, but that’s pretty much everyone. Watching it two more times this week brought back those nostalgic feelings. At one point I caught myself pausing certain scenes to wrap my mind on each layer, which messed with my head. Oh my gosh, that ending! After finding out the truth behind the ending I was left speechless! "Inception" is meant to be questioned and dissected piece by piece, but how can one unravel all of Nolan’s secret messages if he focuses on certain aspects that aren’t the key to our questions, aka the ending.
Our minds go into the layers of the film’s dream, due to the elements of the time duration, bundled layers of complex sets, original instrumentals ,visual effects and acting. These elements makes us feel as if we were slipping away like Cobb’s mind, which makes the impossible seem possible. Film 4 sat down with Nolan and DiCaprio to discuss the making of the film.
(INSERT INTERVIEW)
Even though this film is full of exciting action and it’s perfection in the eyes of a filmmaker, many have forgotten this film or simply did not enjoy it. The issue is that people don’t want to figure out the layers of Nolan’s puzzle or almost be forced into following along every second. People want to take in and enjoy the film with out deeply questioning it, even in this genre. "Inception" is a film that shouldn't be overlooked for it’s original concept and well thought out production. I think it’s a one of a kind film that feels like a film with in a new film, just like its concept. So what you waiting for, need a totem?
