"Find something interesting up there?" Will asked, gesturing to the stars with his red solo cup.

Marcie turned, smiling slightly as she took a sip from her own cup. “Not really. Are you enjoying the party, Will?”

He tutted upon hearing his first name but didn’t bother to correct her. He only nodded, smiling into his cup as he thought on his secret: as much as he fought for her to call him Q, he secretly enjoyed hearing her say Will.

68. Hero - Alex/Kaitlyn

(Author's Note: So, Lizzy! I know we haven't talked much about Alex and Kaitlyn, so let me know if any of this sounds off to you. This wasn't originally meant to be so Alex-heavy, but it just kinda turned out that way. haha.)

"Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit!”

Kaitlyn sighed and ran her hands over her face as her monitor once again sounded a loud alarm and the words “WARNING. BREACH DETECTED” flashed in red.

This was not how this was supposed to happen. Everything had been going so well! How could she even explain this to Bill? Or even worse, M. Frantically, Kaitlyn’s fingers flew over the keyboard, trying to contain the breach, though it seemed like her coding was never quite fast enough to catch the bug.

"Having trouble with the simulator?" A quiet, gravelly voice asked from over Kaitlyn’s shoulder as the entire monitor finally went completely black before a caricature of M began dancing across the screen as a tinny version of Mrs. Robinson by Simon and Garfunkel played over her speakers.

Kaitlyn flushed, recognizing the voice instantly as that of Alex Boothroyd, one of the other head Quartermasters of M1-6. Great. A witness to her immense and total failure. Even better that it was the man she had instantly fallen head over heels for as soon as they were introduced.

“It’s impossible. I’m telling you. I’ve been working at this for three days! I know Q wants me to ramp up my coding skills, even though I’m hardly more than a glorified secretary…” She raised an eyebrow at Alex as he opened his mouth to protest. “We all know it’s true, Alex. Don’t coddle me…” The man gave her a sheepish half-smile and rubbed at the back of his neck as Kaitlyn turned back to the monitor and shook it a few times in frustration. “And the worst part is I thought I was getting better! I did more research, I read more manuals! I don’t understand why I keep failing.”

"Q programmed the simulator to get harder every time.” He responded, stepping closer in order to lean over Kaitlyn and restart the program. “Even if you fail. Even if it’s a different user." Alex laughed a little at the girl’s groaning and laying of her head upon her desk. "Hey… Hey, don’t give up yet! You can usually get around it by using the Konami code to reset the difficulty."

"…Ko-nami code?" Kaitlyn lifted her head to look desperately up at Alex. “What in the hell is a Konami code?”

“Oh my god… Seriously? Um… Okay…” The young man thought for a moment about how to explain one of the most famous cheat codes in all history. “Basically it’s a cheat with the system. Q used to play a lot of video and computer games when he was a kid. It’s how he’s gotten so good at coding and things. And one of the biggest cheats for leveling up quickly was the Konami code.” Alex leaned forward over Kaitlyn once more, causing her to blush furiously again at how close their faces were. Not that Alex was paying much attention to her.

“The code was: up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, A, B.” He said as he pressed the corresponding keys on the keyboard. “Now, some people speculate that you also needed to press select or start to complete or send through the code, but that’s a total myth. It’d actually negate the cheat most of the time. Q knows this, and knows that most anyone who would even think of the cheat would know this. So of course he requires the incorrect code in order to throw off any initial smart-asses like me.” Alex laughed once more, pressing enter and stepping back.

Slowly the tinny music faded away, and the caricature of M was replaced with the beginning screen of the simulator. Kaitlyn let out a small squeal as the computer faded back, even going so far as to jump up and wrap Alex into a tight hug. “Oh my god! Oh my god, thank you! I could bloody well kiss you, Alex! Christ, you’re my hero. My absolute hero for this!”

Alex was the one who flushed a little this time. Of course, he still returned Kaitlyn’s hug a little. Awkwardly, of course, through patting her a little on the back. But it was comforting to hear someone call him their hero again.

"Any time, K. Any time."

"JASON!" Kaitlyn's booming voice sounded through the halls of M1-6 as Jason ducked farther into his cubicle. Kaitlyn was such a stoic rock most of the time, so seeing her lose control was fearsome. "Jason Walters, I have laid specific instructions about my laboratory. I cannot have you messing about with everything! My lab is a finely tuned machine!" "...I was just trying to tidy up a bit is all." "BUT NOW I CAN'T FIND ANYTHING!!!" "Did you look at my diagram, Kaitlyn?" "...No." "Well, there you go."

11. Chemistry by Semisonic [Highschool AU? BECAUSE I CAN'T DECIDE WHAT AU THIS WOULD BE. HALP. it's a song about sex but with ~science innuendos. what au would have that?!]

"So for a while I conducted experiments, and I was amazed by the things I learned. From a fine fine girl with nothing but good intentions and a bad tendency to get burned."

Kaitlyn tucked a lock of hair behind her ear as she and Jason huddled over their Chemistry homework. "The thing is, Jason. You're really, really bloody smart." She said as Jason make a frustrated noise for the millionth time during their tutoring session. "It's just that you have to look at all of these as logic puzzles. You're brilliant at logic puzzles. I think if you just started looking at science differently, you'd be amazing." Jason's furrowed brow smoothed ever so slightly and the ghost of a smile traced across his features. "...I suppose I could at least try it." "That's m'boy."

"How's working with the resident asshole been treating you?" Kaitlyn flushed at Marcie's question, focusing instead on her paperwork. "I haven't the slightest idea what you mean. Without Jason around, I'd be bored out of my mind." Though maybe with more free time.

"They're all bloody idiots you know." He tried not to look directly at K, all puffy eyes and blotchy cheeks from crying over another one of her disastrous presentations. "Imbeciles every one of them..."

"Want part of my Mars Bar?" Kaitlyn asked, holding a piece out to Jason. "You brought sweets to a stakeout?" His tone was incredulous but Jason still took the piece she offered with a gentle hand.

Kaitlyn hated the feeling in her chest she got when anyone asked about her past -- though Jason asking was the worst. Because he would stand for nothing but the truth, and that was the one thing Kaitlyn could never give him.

"Jason, you need to get out of there. NOW." Kaitlyn's voice was tinny over the receiver, a distraction buzzing in Jason's ear as clammy hands wrapped around the handle of his shiny new revolver. "If I leave now, people will die, K. Innocent people!" Kaitlyn took no time to respond, hardly even thinking as she spoke "And instead I lose you? Unacceptable. You get to the safe point right now, Agent 003. That's an order." Jason pursed his lips for a moment before ripping the receiver out of his ear and shouldered his way back into the warehouse.

6. Blood on My Name by The Wright Brothers/The Brothers Bright

"When the fires, when the fires have surrounded you, and the whole wide world coming after you; I've got blood, I've got blood on my name."

"I've always thought about taking a trip to Venezuela..." Jason's lips pursed ever so slightly when those words tripped over Kaitlyn's tongue. "I'd highly suggest against it." He said as he managed to sneak a glance towards Alex.

7. This is Gospel by Panic! At the Disco

"If you love me let me go! 'Cause these words are knives and often leave scars... Truth be told I never was yours; the fear, the fear of falling apart."

"You can't do this. It's too dangerous, even for you. Even a civilian could see this is a trap!" Kaitlyn gripped Jason's arm, all but begging him not to do this. Not this mission. Not this time. Not again. Jason simply gritted his teeth. "It's not as if I have anything to keep me tied here." Kaitlyn let go of his arm and said nothing more of it even after Jason returned from the mission in barely working condition.

8. Drive All Night by NEEDTOBREATHE

"I ain't lookin' for a free ride home, back to the middle. I need a new locale, I need a girl that calls me baby, I gotta know if she can save me."

Kaitlyn was confused when flowers we waiting on her desk one day. Even moreso at the unsigned card that just instructed her to be ready for dinner at 7:30, and the appearance of Jason at that very time looking strangely uncomfortable in casual chic. "I thought this was how people apologized..." He mumbled, leaving Kaitlyn unable to contain her smile.

Exeunt. Postcards from Far Away by Coldplay

No one at M-16 has ever really been able to decipher what the relationship between Kaitlyn Jacobs and Jason Walters really is. Sometimes they say friends, sometimes they say enemies, and rarely.... Rarely they simply smile and shake their heads, Kaitlyn blushing a bit as she looks away. Just another mystery locked away behind bunker doors, sealed with a thank you.

I mean, it'd be hilariously awesome and cute.

Peppy, breezy, kind Mari all bopping around, leading James by the hand to the next engagement. James grumbling to himself that Mari is 'forcing' him to go somewhere, talk to some new elderly or infirm person that Mari made friends with at the market. But there still are the traces of a smile on his lips, because Mari is just SO DAMN HAPPY about everything.

It's infectious. Mari would infect James with the happy. Haha.
