i've been thinking... you know those "he walks like it's heavy" tiktoks? what about a resident!reader x jack abbot where:

reader is talking to trinity and dennis at the nurses station during a lull in their shift, reader has had a crush on jack since first coming to ptmc

they absolutely make it their friends problem, talking their ears off about how amazing jack is, how kind and smart but also HOT and confident he is

reader has started rambling at some point, trinity is ignoring them while trying to catch up on her charting, but dennis is happily listening and lowkey enabling the ranting, at one point asking something along the lines of "do you think it's big?"

que jack, who is doing a double, walking by at the exactly wrong time, smiling when he catches eye contact with reader for a second, right as they're replying to dennis' question

all he hears is reader saying "he walks like it's heavy" and his brain immediately decides that the person he was looking forward to seeing the most (the same person he maybe has a teeny tiny massive crush on) is making fun of him

and look, he isn't normally an insecure person, but he's been at the hospital for the past 18 hours, he's tired, his head has been hurting for ages and his leg is killing him more than usual, so can anyone really blame him, when he thinks you're talking about him?

his heart sinks, a dull ache in his chest, it's not like you know he likes you or that he was naive enough to think you liked him as much as he likes you but still it hurts to think someone he'd like to consider a friend is laughing at him, at his disability none the less

he turns around as his mind begins a self-hating spiral - he's too old for you anyway, a gross old man acting like a lovesick puppy for someone half his age, pathetic really

at the same time, reader's giggles have just died down, they noticed jack as they were answering dennis and were excited to see jack heading their way

they could see the tired smile on the older man's face starting to spread, they looked away for a second trying to discretely fix their hair or something, but when they look back up jack has turned around and started walking the opposite way

reader starts overthinking and worrying that jack has heard them talk to dennis and is definitely disgusted with them objectifying him, that's so unprofessional, oh god

haven't thought about it much more apart from jack and reader individually deciding that avoiding the other person is the best idea for now, so now they're both miserable, overthinking and very obviously basically running away the moment the other enters a room
