“I’m not OK. But I think I will be.”
Is a familiar passage of an individual undergoing depression. This kind of mental health disorder is prevalent especially among teenagers and young adults though no one is exempted as to everyone is vulnerable due to social changes escalating around us which leads to cognitive and physical changes of an individual. One experiencing such must be able to cope up immediately as this leads to other mental or physical disorder, even suicide.
One way of coping up, according to Richard Harrington in his journal article (link:below), is brief problem-oriented counselling. It could be one form of therapy in curing depression. And that improving communication within the family may be of value. Also, problem solving has a theoretical basis in adolescent self-harm because these patients are often poor problem solvers and because there is evidence that related techniques such as cognitive-behaviour therapy are effective in improving adolescent depression.
Harrington said that, depression is poorly understood. And that’s because “people tend to ignore what they can’t physically see” and so, Mental Health Awareness which is also allocated for the month of October, is one way of bringing down the walls of stigma by sharing experiences, stories, and truths. It means educating others on what mental illness really is, and helping those with illnesses know they are not alone and that they can someday-somehow pass that stage in their life.
And in addition to that, according to Annie Slease “Mental illness awareness means acceptance and love rather than judgement and shame; it means an end to the stigma and the beginning of hope.” Because everyone you meet might be fighting a battle you know nothing about. So be sensitive and be KIND. Always.
Because despite the increase in awareness of mental health over the past several years, there’s still a long way to go before mental health conversations are the norm. So let us take time to read and understand. Let’s take part in spreading awareness =]
