I don't think you cand judge by grammar alone, since there are a lot of writers out there from non-english countries that just can't write that good in english, but they still wanna try. I think you can spot them through the way they express in their fics.

I agree! I think because all of us were teens at some point (and chances are we read/wrote fanfics back then as well), it’s super apparent when it’s a teen writer now as an adult reader. Because there are certain tropes, dialogues, the way they characterize certain characters on top of— like you said— the way they express themselves, that are dead giveaways of a younger writer. You can tell a lot by someone’s writing, and one of them is the mentality and mindset (in the sense of maturity) + you can usually tell the way they perceive the world as well as themselves.
