4:41 AM
The majority of my night was wide awake.
I closed my eyes, and when I was finally able to rest, an earthquake hit all of us in Los Angeles. From no sleep to sleep, and from sleep to waking up screaming while my room felt like it was going to break in two. My dog flew all from under the table to my bed, and my roommate started screaming right after me. A loud noise, followed by a massive shake made me feel small. There was nothing to do besides sit through it.
It shook my sanity; my heart tightened up. I wanted to reach for my phone to call every single face that came into my mind. The morning was on its way, and I had this intense feeling of holding on to love and life.
I sought a moment that would ground me back to earth again. With that in mind, I chose to bathe my puppy and play a famous album I heard of but never paid close attention to.
When morning arrived, I could hear the birds singing by my window. After such an uneasy night, it was refreshing to hear nature back to a calmer state. My rule is to make my bed first before anything when I am up. I picked up a shirt. I didn't care much if it got wet or not.
The warm water had filled the bathtub by the time I was done collecting what I would need for my dog's bath: shampoo, conditioner, brush, and towels... I plugged my phone into my speakers and let the new album play as our background music.
I had a little cup that I would pour the water over her coat with. I gently scrubbed the dirtiness off my furry friend, noting the displeased face she gave. Her favorite part of the bath was when it was done. I dried, brushed, kissed, hugged, and pet her with all the love I could give.
The album's melody won me a good moment and my heart. I felt a little late to the party since it's an older album, but now I have the rest of my days to enjoy it. The grooviness of the songs became fuel for the bright day now ahead of me. I realized it was possible turn-around feeling small and terrified, as long as I chose that path.
It's a grand moment to have a sunny day where life and I have moved on from another earthquake. - Bruna Ferreira
