India Project - St. Joseph’s Boys’ Home - Annual Report 2014-15
Muttom - INDIA
With immense pleasure and profound gratitude we submit St. Joseph’s Boys’ Home annual report for the year 2014-15.
History of the Home
St. Joseph’s Boys’ Home was established in the year 2005 to meet not only the felt needs but also the real needs of the rural deserted, dejected, deprived, neglected and marginalized poor children in general and the Tsunami affected children of the fisher folk in particular. With the sense of mental satisfaction we declare that as of date 210 boys have directly benefited from the Boys’ Home.
St. Mary’s Girls’ Home:
St. Mary’s Girls’ Home was established in the year 2007. It had been providing boarding and schooling for 122 girls until August 2014. Due to Government’s stringent rules and regulations it was shut in August 2014. The girls were safely handed over to the custody of their parents, guardians and other children’s Homes with the consent of their parents and guardians. Now we have adopted St. Anthony’s Girls’ Home, Enayamputhenthurai with a strength of 55 girls at present.
Present strength of our Home:
We have now stepped into the 9th year. There are 33 boys reading from Class VI to class X residing now in our Home. These 33 children are looked after by 3 academic staff and 5 supporting staff.
In addition we also support 8 boys and 9 girls to continue their class XI and XII by staying with their parents or families. Thus this year we support a total of 50 children apart from the newly adopted 55 children of St. Antony’s Girls’ Home, Enayamputhenthurai to continue their schooling.
Aims and objectives of the Home:
- To provide educational opportunities to the educationally, economically and socially backward rural children, particularly, the hapless children of the fisher folk who are directly or indirectly affected by Tsunami.
- To maintain good discipline among the boys.
- To inculcate moral, social, ethical and cultural values and thereby witnessing Christ in their simple and humble life.
- To provide the right ambience in order to understand the values of high ideals such as leadership, responsibility, solidarity, belongingness, adaptation, adjustment and sharing and train them in their daily life in a holistic way.
- To get exposed to an English atmosphere so as to improve their communicative skills and equip them to face today’s highly sophisticated and competitive society.
- To get the best available exposure so as to cope with any environment and to pursue high technological and management studies in par with the urban children.
- To bring out the hidden potentialities among our children especially their unique individual abilities through a healthy atmosphere and make them erstwhile citizens of the world.
Activities
We aim towards an integral growth of the boys. In order to achieve this, we give them up-to-date technical and language tasks for their benefit.
i) Special Classes:
We rope in Language Experts from our district to conduct Special Language Programs which keep them in touch with the English language so that they get an exposure to English language.
We conduct week-end classes in Mathematics wherein the boys undergo classes with a lot of quiz programs, Mathematical games and easy ways of remembering the difficult theorems and formulae.
ii) Sports and games:
Now although we are in a mechanical, computerized and competitive world, we still live in a polluted environment. So health is our main concern. In order to inculcate this simple understanding in the minds of our children we make all our boys participate in games every evening between 4.30 to 5.30 pm.
iii) Counseling:
Most of our boys are from deserted and deprived families. Some of them even come from very unprivileged backgrounds. We find that the boys from such families naturally don’t develop self-confidence and self-esteem. And this hinders their progress and it also leads to a negative outlook. To overcome such inferiority complex and withdrawal traits Sr. Joyce offers regular counseling to our boys.
iv) Summer Camp:
Every year during summer holidays we have a summer camp in our Home. This year we had summer camp from 19th to 24th May 2014.
Functional English, Moral Instruction, Computer Training, Stress Management, Health and Hygiene and Higher Education were the important topics in which eminent educationists and well informed social activists shared their knowledge and expertise with our boys. Every evening we used to have different cultural and entertainment programs. The boys really enjoyed such programs.
v) Medical Camp:
This year on 22nd August Dr. M. Chidambaram Pillai M.B.B.S, DCH from Jeppiar Remibai Hospital conducted a medical check-up and prescribed the necessary medicines to get cured from minor ailments which our children were suffering from.
Festival and functions:
Festivals and functions are social gatherings for our boys. They open our closed minds, provide opportunities to remember the importance of a particular day or the contribution of a particular person to the society. Today’s self-centered and money minded society has forgotten or is in the process of forgetting these self-explanatory important days. Our Home is in the right process of enriching humaneness in our boys. Keeping in memory these important days we inculcate the rich values that those festivals and functions remind us of.
a) Children’s Day:
Today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders. To emphasize the importance of children in a society we celebrate Children’s Day on 14th Nov every year. To start with we celebrated a Holy Mass before we began the Children’s Day Celebration. Very ideally S. Arnold Mathew and T. Hilson Pushpa from Std VI played the chief guests. All our boys participated in the cultural event and enjoyed the dinner.
b) Christmas Eve:
Throughout the year we see to it that we lay special emphasis on religious activities. And Christmas Eve is very important to all of us. In commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ Christmas Eve was celebrated in our Home on 23rd December. All our children exchanged Christmas gifts with their respective Christmas friends. Fr. Dominic distributed new dresses to the boys and staff. Christmas message was also delivered by him.
c) Pongal Day:
Every year on 15th January we celebrate Pongal Day / Harvest Festival. And the boys understand the importance of hard work and the resultant Harvest reward.
d) Independence Day:
On August 1947 our Mother India was freed from the clutches of the British rule. Today all of us breathe and enjoy the freedom. But do we ever think about the lives lost and the blood sacrificed to gain freedom? To remind our boys our freedom struggle and its relevance in today’s society we celebrate Independence day every year.
e) Founder’s Day:
Our Boys’ Home is not only just the desire of Rev. Fr. S. Joseph Bernard Rosario but also his determined, persistent, dynamic and energetic dreams. To show him the gratitude of the boys of our Home we celebrate October 14, the very birthday of our beloved Rev. Fr. S. Joseph Bernard Rosario as Founder’s Day.
Meetings for class XI and XII:
Rev. Fr. S. Joseph Bernard Rosario bears the expenses for the out gone boys to successfully complete their senior secondary course while they still stay with their parents/guardians. They also visit us and do participate in the Home activities while we give them an opportunity to directly discuss their problems if any and get their grievances redressed at the earliest.
Visitors from abroad:
The Boys of our Home are fortunate enough to interact with our soul-mates from the West. They enjoy the freedom of conversing with foreigners in English which boost their confidence level and self-esteem.
Academic excellence and achievements:
Due to the hard work and the consistent support of the Headmaster and teachers of All Saints Higher Secondary School and our animators all our 5 boys performed well in std X Board Examination held in April 2014. The following are the marks scored by our boys out of 500.
C. Sahaya Pravin Raj 454
L. Mathan Lal 439
T. Saravanan 413
S.M. Naxwel Sithu 376

We hold regular meetings offering an opportunity to every parent so that we might receive their kind co-operation in the smooth running of the academic stream. They extended their full support for the growth of the Home and they were a driving force towards the development of each individual’s personality all through the year.
Conclusion:
On this auspicious occasion we do remember our sponsors and benefactors. But for the sacrifices, kind gestures, their magnanimity and continuous financial support we would not have been able to realize this mission. On behalf of Rev. Fr. S. Joseph Bernard Rosario, the Staff and the Boys, we whole-heartedly thank our beloved benefactors and sponsors on this august day.
