SAY MY NAME
In honor of the premiere of the second half of the final series, Breaking Bad is getting its own local tribute beer appropriately titled "Heisenberg's Dark."
If you've read my blog before, you know I have two obsessions that I like to combine: television and craft beer. Four months ago, I paired AMC's Breaking Bad with one of my favorite New York brews, Blue Point Brewing Company's Blueberry Ale. Obviously, Heisenberg's blue ice meth was the clear influence for my favorite blueberry ale. I had attempted to find an Albuquerque-based blueberry ale, but alas, none could be found. But with Ommegang starting the TV-Beer trend and the finale of Breaking Bad looming (NO, BITCH!), Marble Brewery announced the release of the India Black Ale with an EPIC Instagram photo featuring some famous-bald headed locals.
Considering the history and palette of an India Black Ale, I don't think Marble Brewery could have chosen a better style to represent the villain protagonist in AMC's long-running, Emmy-awarding drama.
American craft brewers' love affair with hops and the constant push to innovate new ways of using them lead to the creation of the American Black Ale (ABA), otherwise known as the India Black Ale. It supposedly originated in Vermont in 1994, but didn't gain a surge of popularity until 2007 when the Cascadian Dark Ale took off in the Pacific Northwest region. While similar to the India Pale Ale, the malt bill is modified to include highly kilned or roasted malts that give the brew a dark brown or black appearance. That still doesn't affect the aromas however - the aggressive hop portfolio from the end of the boil and dry-hopping ranges from grassy, spicy, floral, citrus, and pine. No matter what its color may be, the Black Ale still relies on the pillars of IPA structure: a malt flavor backbone that is dominated by the heart of ample bitterness and hop flavor.
With vigorous hop additions that kicks the corners of your mouth, a bittered mouthfeel taste throughout a gulp, and the black-as-Heisenburg's-soul shade, Marble Brewery's Heisenburg's Dark says: I AM THE ONE WHO KNOCKS!
