Indian Knowledge Systems in Education: Pride, Purpose and the Need for Balance
Recent changes in Indian school textbooks, such as the inclusion of ancient mathematician Baudhāyana’s contribution to the right-angled triangle theorem, reflect a larger shift in India’s academic policy. This shift aims to recognise India’s historical contributions to science, mathematics, philosophy, and culture. It highlights Baudhāyana’s work in NCERT textbooks is the part of broader attempt to correct what many see as a long-standing imbalance in how knowledge has been presented to Indian students. The key question, however, is whether such changes are fully justified, and whether they genuinely strengthen education or risk mixing pride with politics.
