Former Atomic Energy Commission Chairman M.R. Srinivasan Dies at 95
M.R. Srinivasan, a towering figure in India’s nuclear science community and the former Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), passed away in Udhagamandalam on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at the age of 95.
Srinivasan's career in the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) began in September 1955, marking the beginning of a lifelong commitment to India’s nuclear ambitions. He worked closely with the legendary Dr. Homi Bhabha in the groundbreaking effort to establish India's first nuclear research reactor, Apsara. Apsara achieved criticality in August 1956, a major milestone in India’s nuclear journey. Srinivasan’s contributions to the reactor’s construction laid the foundation for India’s rise as a key player in nuclear technology.
Throughout his career, Srinivasan was instrumental in advancing India's atomic energy sector. As the Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy and later as the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, he played a pivotal role in shaping the nation's nuclear policy and infrastructure. His leadership left an indelible mark on India’s scientific and technological landscape.
