"Are those scales? Are those actual scales?"
Adore faltered, self-consciousness taking over her as her hands went straight to the exposed scales to attempt to cover them up.
The Merpeople Immersion Programs that had recently started up in South Californian schools were a big leap towards a future where merpeople and landpeople could live together symbiotically and Adore had been excited to enroll right away despite her mother’s hesitancy to let her merchild stray too far from the beach for extended periods of time. It was now common knowledge that merpeople could survive on land given that they still had access to saltwater in case they dried out too much, and the schools that initiated the program were required to have a pool of saltwater in case of an emergency, but even so, Adore felt okay being on land. Her tail morphed and adapted to land with more ease now and she could actually walk okay on her legs without tripping over her own feet, so she was excited to finally go to school together with landpeople. She thought it would be fun and maybe people wouldn’t notice.
Except apparently her body wasn’t morphing correctly, or maybe she was just too jumpy and excited, and the scales on her body became visible. She stared at the other student with wide eyes, much like a deer caught in headlights, not sure what to say. Sure, merpeople were accepted but there was still the underlying fear of discrimination and bullying from landpeople. “Umm.. yeaaah?” Adore replied nervously, mentally berating herself for losing her cool and stuttering. Fuck it, she was supposed to be proud of her origins as she’d always told herself she would be, so why was she feeling self-conscious about it now? “I grew up by the beach,” she said, as though that explained everything. Well, to her it did, because that was a normal thing for her people to say in reference to their ocean dwellings and to imply being a merperson. “My name’s Adore.”
