i think part of it is, like every other character in the show, he's concerned about image - in his case as a politician, and betty makes a pretty politician's wife. fortunately he's also a pretty good guy :P

yeah it’s probably hard to be a single politician (especially at his age) so he definitely needed someone and in that regard he and Betty got together for kind of the same reasons
