#HelenaGualinga is an #indigenous #activist from #Ecuador. Like Artemisa Xakriabá, her people, the #Kichwa People of #Sarayaku, are threatened by the destruction of their lands in the form of oil drilling, deforestation, and fires. She has witnessed her relatives fighting for their territories since she was young, and has followed in their footsteps. The Kichwa People launched the #LivingForestDeclaration last year, proposing not only national but international protection for indigenous lands. Not only is this important for the protection of indigenous people, but it is also the most effective way of conserving forests and biodiversity of the plants and animals that live within them. White people who go to climb Mount Everest deserve to die on it too. You put the indigenous people of Nepal, the sherpa, in danger every year with your egotistical attempts at summitting and desecrating a mountain that they consider sacred. That they consider sacrilege to summit. They have to map the icefall every year for the westerners who commit to climb it or else they will not get paid to feed their families. They die mapping the icefall. And what is your reaction? They should thank them? The Sherpas have lived on that mountain for thousand of years. And because of the destruction of their country that white people caused they are forced to capitalize their sacred land? No, you don’t thank the white people. So I say it again. White people deserve to die on Everest. On Sagarmatha.

I guarantee you that anyone who says their proud of “being white” is racist. being proud of being white is very different from being proud of being French, or Russian, or English, Spanish, Italian etc...The use of the word whiteness in a racial context is something white people created to separate themselves from the people they were violently colonizing. It is a red flag to POC to hear a white person say they are “proud of being white”. Being proud of being white is not being proud of your ethnicity; Spanish, French, Italian, English, Belgian , etc. It’s being proud of 500 years of colonization, violent imperialism, murder, genocide, rape, destruction, theft and terror that white people collectively committed against POC around the world. It tells us that you hold the collective violent colonial history of Europe in higher regard than the history of your specific ethnicity, whatever it may be.
