Some books are meant to be read, to be savoured, exactly when the time feels right. I'm so grateful for having some downtime this winter season to be able to catch up on some #IndigenousReads that have been on my list for a hot minute. This year I've had the great opportunity to read both @tanyatagaq & @bev_sellars_ books. Next up Alicia Elliott. Today is the National Day For Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day. One way to acknowledge the horrible crimes Canada has committed against Indigenous people in the form of residential schools is to learn more and to support Indigenous authors' books about it. Be sure to follow Indigenous people on social media and support their works directly. I'm working on a longer resource list, but in the meantime, these are some of the books you can grab. -Sugar Falls: A Residential School Story by David Alexander Robertson, art by Scott B. Henderson -Phyllis's Orange Shirt by Phyllis Webstad, art by Brock Nicol -Speaking Our Truth: A Journey of Reconciliation by Monique Gray Smith -Fatty Legs: A True Story by Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margaret Pokiak-Fenton, art by Liz Amini-Holmes #orangeshirtday #truthandreconciliation #residentialschools #indigenousreads #indigenousliterature #reading #books #booksofinsta #bookstagram #booksofinstagram #nonfictionbooks #comics #picturebook#kidlit https://www.instagram.com/p/CUdv2zcr77_/?utm_medium=tumblr

Some Indigenous Peoples Day selected readings for this evening! I'm reading two books from Katherena Vermette, the comic A Girl Called Ech Vol 3: Northwest Resistance (art by Scott B. Henderson, colours by Donovan Yaciuk) and the poetry collection River Woman. I'm a big fan of the previous comics in this series and of previous poetry by the author, so I'm excited for both. #indigenoushistorymonth #indigenouspeoplesday #indigenousreads #books #booksofinstagram #bookstagram #booksofinsta #poetrybooks #comics https://www.instagram.com/p/CBtta_8ALRx/?igshid=w96yd5pbxpoq

I just finished reading this, and it is one of the most powerful books I’ve ever read. I may never be the same again. It’s stylistically original, it’s raw and beautiful and harrowing, and it has a full cast of complex and nuanced characters. I’m not usually one for books that are hyped to this degree, but wow, this really lives up to the praise that is going around.
Among myriad noteworthy parts of this novel, there was a passage that might be the best passage of women’s solidarity in the face of violent men that I’ve ever read. It’s not a long passage, although it is too long to share, so I’ll share a small part of it. A woman is hiding in a stall in a public bathroom from her husband, and another woman has recently also entered the washroom:
The door to the bathroom opens again. I drop my head down again. Fuck. His shoes. I get back up on the toilet.
“Blue?” His voice booms in the stall.
“This is the women’s room, sir,” the woman in the stall next to me says. “There’s no one in here but me.” And I know she must have heart me in the next stall when I peed.
“Sorry,” Paul says.
There’s still too much time before the bus gets here. He’ll wait for the lady to leave and come back in. I hear the door open then close again.
“Please,” I whisper to the woman, “he’s after me.” And I don’t know what I’m asking her to do.
“What time’s your bus leaving, darling?” the woman says.
“Thirty minutes,” I say.
“Don’t worry. When you get to my age, you can get away with that much time in here. I’ll stay with you,” she says, and I start to cry. Not loud, not a sob, but I know she can hear me. The snot comes and I sniff in hard so it won’t keep coming.
Buy it from Indigo if you’re in Canada, or Barnes and Noble in the US! Please avoid Amazon if you can, it makes it really difficult for booksellers and publishers to keep producing amazing books when we support Amazon as a book retailer. You can also place it on hold at your local library if you’re willing to wait a bit!
Day 40: #themarrowthieves by #cheriedimaline—another book I’m hoping wins big. If you read any other dystopian in your lifetime, you must read this book. #bookstagram #365books #yalit #indigenousreads
