indigo-away answered your post: Also: re Roleplay Awards
How do you get more competitive with RP to get awards? What, you write more? Explore more challenging material? Get better at your craft?
That's a good question. I guess I think of RP these days in a similar way to how I think about fanfic -- it's definitely possible to have, I don't know, better skills when it comes to rp: a greater writing ability, perhaps. A better concept of how to engage and work harmoniously and collaboratively with a partner. A better take on the character (whether that means 'more canon', or just 'more enjoyable to read' would depend on the reader, and the person doing the nominating).
I mean I think with the advent of things like Tumblr and Twitter for RP, it's become an art form that is definitely consumed by more than just the two people writing (as it was in our day, Sab--oh hallowed AIM, how I miss thee). It's not uncommon for people here to have their threads read and liked by numerous people, even reblogged as you would a fanfic.
Writing more? Maybe. I think as we're conceptualizing the awards, we're looking at having an 'emerging' and an 'established' category, so it's not all just the oldbies who've been round in the fandom for over a year now, and thus have 1000s of followers. I want it be about promoting new blogs, too. Basically it's just like 'hey, I read your portrayal and/or interacted with you, and thought you did an amazing job! Here's a nomination!'.
But I think you'd agree, RP is a collaborative storytelling skill that is developed over time, with practice, communication, and work. Putting a blog together is hard work! Maintaining it is hard work! It'd be cool to see roleplayers represented in this.
(Oh, we're also thinking of categories for favorite threads--favorite smut thread, favorite angst thread, etc...just so we really point to the collab. nature of roleplaying, that it's not a culture of celebrity around one particularly mun or one particular muse - it's about working with others, building community, world building etc).
