Affordable, Simple Ergonomic School Desk/Chair
Recent research has shown that childrens increased use of laptops and smaller tech devices without proper workplace positioning is increasing musculoskeletal discomfort. Laptops are becoming increasingly common in schools and due to the keyboard being attached, the screen is not able to be moved and positioned correctly at eye hieght, encouraging slouching and close proximity to the screen. Other issues found within school furniture is the lack of appropraite angle on teh desk tops. Flat surfaces force a hunched posture whilst writing. And chairs are usually straight backed and provide no ergonomic features. "Young children worldwide are starting to complain now more than ever of musculoskeletal discomfort.” - http://www.nbcnews.com/id/41718918/ns/technology_and_science-digital_home/t/tech-overload-causing-kids-back-neck-problems/ "Computer-related discomfort in childhood and adolescence is of particular concern as the musculoskeletal system and posture are still developing." - www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health/warning-of-future-epidemic-as-8216generation-overuse8217-feels-the-pain-of-new-technology/story-fneuzlbd-1226718767698 The number of children receiving treatment for back or neck pain doubled over the six month period between September 2011 and March 2012. - www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/10445315/Technology-is-a-back-injury-time-bomb-for-children.html “Modern lifestyles and the increase in technology are having detrimental effects on our children’s musculoskeletal health and, if not addressed in school and at home now, will have far reaching effects for our children, the future working generation and society.” - http://www.theguardian.com/education/2008/nov/18/ergonomics-posture-schools-wheatfields My proposal is that of a simply built and easily installed chair/desk that encourages correct posture both for writing and technology use.
