If you have tropicals—like hibiscus—that winter indoors and tend to sunburn (leaves turn white/translucent) in their first few outdoor days in spring, here is my simple, inexpensive, and effective solution. Make a canopy of cheesecloth (from Amazon), 4 tall sticks (from Amazon or garden center), twisty ties. Using this, you can place them in their sunny location right away—no need to gradually transition them to full sun. In Wisconsin, I move my tropicals outside in mid to late May when nighttime temps stay above 45. I leave the canopy on my hibiscus for about a week, then they are “hardened” and do not get burned.
