i feel a little bad saying this because it's design originally comes from a dream i had years ago and it feels wrong to deviate further from that than i already have but i feel like the indulype needs a bit of a redesign

i remembered the fact that undeveloped cores literally just spawn and appear in places and i was like "why don't the orchurists just pick up the cores off the fucking ground. are they stupid?" but the thing is ☝️ undeveloped cores are like. intensely powerful and seep magic into the very earth and are capable of altering the beings that live within its radius so i figured that undeveloped cores are simply too strong to feed to an indulypse and would be like trying to drink sulphuric acid, and when cosmiers are born this overwhelming power is removed from the core (recycled to make the cosmier's body?) which would then render it edible to the indulypse. and this is actually great because i've been needing to figure out what you do to get rid of an indulypse (which is the correct course of action) and this would probably tie into it well
waitttt i should even more nonsensical and silly with the indulypse stuff
okay so like
cosmier dies and an indulypse sprouts from its remains -> the indulypse chooses a messenger to feed it during its youth -> grows enough to gain the ability to act more independently -> becomes less of a tangible(?) thing as it grows and consumes more -> starts to spread across the cosmos and destroy everything in its path -> reaches the universe's core and starts to eat through it -> owner of the core becomes seriously ill and is compelled to go to a specific spot to collapse -> cosmier dies and an indulypse sprouts from its remain -> cycle repeats
just had a thought about an indulypse functioning a bit like cordyceps
that poll made me realize that i should probably really think about the whole “harvesting cosmiers and feeding their cores to the indulypse” thing more because like. how the fuck are they getting all those cosmiers
okay, so. elaborating on that last post. the indulypse wants to consume cosmier cores, this is known. it relies on the orchurists to feed it since the indulypse cannot move and is not capable of properly harvesting cores. but like, it isn’t just going to do that forever, eventually it’s going to grow and enter later stages. for something so incredibly important to the story, i really haven’t thought of those later stages very much
but i’m starting to do so now!! so the purpose of the creatures is to feed the indulypse without the help of the cultists. they sense anyone that has a significant amount of magic in them (mainly cosmiers, but also guardians* and humans, to a much lesser extent) and then tries to devour them whole. they can’t be torn up in any way because that runs the risk of destroying a core, so no biting or chewing or anything that causes extreme injuries. a cosmier that has been devoured would slowly be dissolved alive while their core is carefully kept intact
(at least the orchurists put you to sleep before killing you, good god)
once that process is done, the creature would merge back into the indulypse, feeding it the magic that it had absorbed
*i don’t want them to be called that but at the moment they don’t have any other name
[trying to feed the world-ending creature] oh hey man. dude what. this? yeah it’s my job. what are you freaking out about. i’m literally just doing my job. i don’t get what the big deal is. calm down it’s not like it’s the end of the world or someth
