Good Omens Fanfic Recs - Trope #1: Social Media
Social media is designed to give you dopamine hits, so it follows that a good social media fanfic is addictive, too? "Social media platforms produce the same neural circuitry that is seen in those with a gambling addiction and recreational drug users." It's a narrative opportunity for a character to struggle with identity and self-presentation: to be shy and inhibited and also to take risks and miscommunicate. Plus we're all on social media RIGHT NOW and immersed in the parasocial experience. Maybe this trope benefits from "write what you know."
*New* Twitter & Grindr by Literallymyusername (Rated Teen & up, is a Teen & up, 5K, finished).
This has got to be one of the funniest takes on naive-Aziraphale-gets-an-iPhone-and-has-mishaps-and Crowley-freaks-out. I was actually laughing out loud at all the ways Aziraphale was so delightfully clueless and made Crowley scramble.
some faith (the slow show (fandom remix) by attheborder, curtaincall (Rated Teen and up, 7K, Finished)
This takes you into the fandom for Warlock, the fictional show starring Anthony Crowley and Avery Fell in @mia_ugly's Slow Show (one of my Being in the Closet recs). It’s got a whole online ecosystem of Tumblr, Twitter, Buzzfeed, press releases, memes, and more… It’s off the wall. Personally, I do not partake in real people fic, not my cuppa, but it was a wild to experience into a energy of RPF fandom for the real-in-this-fictional-universe characters. I cackled a lot.
Big Name Feelings & And They Were Streamers by @mrghostrat (both Rated Explicit, respectively 100K & finished and 50K and finished)
The first social media fics that engrossed me were @mrghostrat's Big Name Feelings & And They Were Streamers. Respectively taking on the fake relationship & the secret relationship, each story builds up characterization, voice, and sexual tension that's different, plausible, and both times, totally WORKS. I have reread both of these. I love them.
Streamers is technically unfinished, but I want to make the argument that it's a fully realized AU and it's really satisfying to dip into that world, regardless of endings. It's testament to how captivating it is that there is so much fanart for it. An added bonus is that Ghostrat wrote this scorching standalone pwp in this alt universe Impromptu Collab about Crowley on OnlyFans and it's so hot. (More on the SW trope later)
Press L in the Chat (for Love) by chamyl, Djapchan, JoseyxNeko, Phoenix_Soar, SkyAsimaru, snakeandmoon, Starlightdreamerstar, thundercrackpod (thundercrackfic), WaldosAkimbo, wargoddess9 (Wargoddess9), with (Literarion) (Rated Explicit, 30K, finished)
My other favorite social media fic, so far -- for more sexy bickering and enemies-to-lovers,
Experiments of an angel who has read entirely too much fanfic by azzfell,@fellshish (Rated Teen and up, 3K, finished)
Like the title says: hilarious, good natured Ineffable idiots nonsense. It's brilliant because it’s feels perfectly in character that Aziraphale would methodically try out every romantic trope from fanfic in hopes of getting Crowley's attention.
Dim the Lights and Sing You Songs by Polaris (Rated Explicit, 27K, finished)
“Crowley keeps trying to meet his Grindr fuckbuddy. Aziraphale keeps showing up at all his meeting spots. This is terrible.” I will happily read every story where they accidentally start anonymously meeting over Grindr... I love how this one veers through lust, anger, and tenderness. Bonus Crowley Snek!
