she doesn’t request remand at arraignment -- much to the dismay of the arresting officers involved. jack would have her ass if this strategy went awry and alex had no faith that it wouldn’t. allowing a cop killer off with a minimal bail that most small time criminals received was negligent, but she wasn’t playing fast and loose with this case. there was something in kyle’s story that still bothered her-- something that the detectives were covering up and she would blame small details on a lack of evidence that could still be built leading up to trial. alex wasn’t sure it would ever get that far.
alex waits until kyle is alone, watches from the far corner of the gallery until the younger woman’s counsel leaves, loudly lauding himself for thinking he’s gotten one over on the d.a.’s office all the way. she approaches with caution, careful not to arouse the suspicion of any lingering detectives. she doesn’t meet kyle’s eyes and barely even looks in her direction as she comes to stand next to her. “you and i aren’t done.” her voice is soft, undeterred by the gaze of court officers milling about. “i need to talk to you. off the record. no cops, and without your sleazebag lawyer interrupting me.”
it’s only then that she finally raises her eyes, making a point out of looking kyle over. for her own selfish reasons, perhaps, but mostly out of respect. “you’re not a monster, and you’re not safe on your own.”
