Five Bright Planets (Plus The Moon!) Grace Midwinter Morning Skies

For several weeks around the end of January to the end of February, the five planets known to the ancients will be visible in one grand sweep across the morning skies of Earth. Already, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are seen in the hour or so before dawn; as Venus begins its dive back in the direction toward the Sun and superior conjunction, Mercury joins the party around 20 January, itself having passed inferior conjunction on the 14th. At first, Mercury will be very low on the horizon and difficult to spot in twilight; by the first few mornings in February, it will be nearly as high up as Venus and easier to spot.

The Moon joins the assembly on 27 January, passing first near Jupiter. On 1 February it edges Mars at a distance of a little more than half a degree, or barely the apparent size of the Moon itself. Saturn gets a close approach on the morning of 3 February, while its closest approach to Venus (as seen from the U.S.) happens during daylight hours on the 5th. It remains near both Venus and Mercury the following morning. The image above shows the night sky on the morning of 29 January.

Why do the planets seem to neatly fall along an invisible line in the night sky? That alignment is not the result of chance; rather, it tells us something about the symmetry of the Solar System and even about how our planetary family formed. That invisible line is the ecliptic, the projection onto the night sky of the “plane of the Solar System” in which the orbits of the major planets generally lie. In turn, that preference for something like a flat plane indicates the geometry of the long-gone presolar nebula. As the cloud of gas and dust from which the Sun condensed began to contract under the gravitational influence of our rapidly-forming star, it started to spin. Conservation of angular momentum shaped the cloud, causing it bunch and thicken perpendicular to the spin axis. It was in this increasingly dense, flattened disk that the seeds of the planets originated. 

How do we know this? We’ve seen them. The Hubble Space Telescope has spied evidence of these dusty disks around other stars:

In these images, they don’t look like neat, round circles because they’re seen from the side. In that case, the dense material in the disk blots out the light of the star in the center, enabling us to see the disk material itself lit up by the star.The physical properties of these disks match what the knowledge of our own Solar System implies, leading us to feel confident that our models for star and planet formation are basically correct. 

So when you go out and look up later this month, keep in mind that these “pearls on a string” across the predawn sky actually tell us something important about where our own planet came from.

On August 15, 2015 we experience the Inferior Conjunction of Venus with the Sun, when Venus goes cazimi into the heart of the Sun and forms an exact conjunction.  The Inferior Conjunction of Venus happens when Venus is exactly orbiting between our Earth and our Sun, and so it symbolizes the meaning of a NEW VENUS much like a New Moon in our life. While we may attempt to direct the rays of the Sun with our Venusian mirrors to help us look better or feel better about ourselves, the more we can step into the full flames of the Solar Rays the more we can experience a fiery purification of our past Venusian values in preparation for the new cycle between the Sun and Venus.

This is a powerful day to go within and set intentions for what you want to magnetize and attract into your life in the new cycle ahead.  Astrologer Anne Massey in her book Venus wrote that since the rose is a symbol of Venus, we can imagine ourselves at the New Venus as being a rose bud wet with morning dew, delicately beginning to unfold into a blooming rose at Full Venus.  The Full Venus is the Superior Conjunction that occurs when Venus moves direct into the heart of the Sun, orbiting on the other side of the Sun from our perspective on Earth.  Within the five pointed star formed by the Venus retrograde cycle, we experience a Full Venus four years after a New Venus close to the same day and zodiac degree.  In this case, we will end up having a Full Venus occur on August 14, 2019 at 21°11′ of Leo.

Bringing in the other astrological aspects of this Inferior Conjunction, it is notable that Jupiter will have recently ingressed into Virgo and is conjunct the Moon in Virgo, and Mercury the ruler of Virgo is in it’s own sign of Virgo and applying to a conjunction with Juno in Virgo, separating from an opposition with Neptune and applying to an opposition with Chiron in Pisces.  There is potential to gain a new sense of the deepest levels of our being at this time, yet in order to receive the insight of this healing perspective it is necessary to strip away illusions of control and to utilize the capacity of Mercury in its Sage phase of Evening Star to open yourself to fully experience the process of your unconscious at work.  As Carl Jung wrote in his Alchemical Studies:

We must be able to let things happen in the psyche. For us, this is an art of which most people know nothing. Consciousness is forever interfering, helping, correcting, and negating, never leaving the psychic processes to grow in peace.

“The Water Nymph” painting above is by an artist, John Collier, with an interesting connection to this astrological moment- he was born in 1850, the last time Neptune was in Pisces at its current area of Pisces, and he also was born with an Aquarius Mercury in the same place as the upcoming inferior conjunction of Mercury retrograde and the Sun.  To me, the “nymph” in the image is completely absorbed into nature, her natural surroundings, the Soul of the world, opening her to a direct connection with Spirit.  While this connects with Mercury conjunct Neptune in Pisces, so does her gazing at her reflection in the water connect with a Mercury retrograde cycle beginning in Pisces.  During Mercury retrograde we have the opportunity to reflect upon our perceptions, imaginings, and just exactly where are thoughts are coming from.  This can be an internal experience, but we will most likely get a sense of how our inner dynamics are operating through our relationship to the outer world and interactions with others, including conflicts.  There are astrological signs we will experience challenges in the external world at this time, as calming as Mercury stationing retrograde conjunct Neptune in Pisces may sound.  This is because Mercury stationing retrograde happens at a first quarter Moon of Taurus at 19 degrees that is especially intense, as the Aquarius Sun and Taurus Moon forms a t-square with Saturn in Scorpio at 23 degrees.  This is happening simultaneous to the other big t-square of Cancer Jupiter opposite Venus and Pluto in Capricorn, all in square to Uranus in Aries.  Beginning on February 6, we will be facing these challenges with Mercury descended to the underworld, acting as the Psychopomp guide of our souls.
