NAME: detra kom ouskejon AGE: twenty-four DUTY: fleimkeepa; while not as focused on the fleim, detra convinced the keepers that learning about their past could divulge more information about pre-bekka and the beginnings of their faith. as it is, she now travels searching for texts, artifacts, and other documents that can help give their existence context. OUSKEJON: in my interpretation of grounder clans, the blue cliff lives in the pocket between the appalachian mountains and the coast of the lake erie ( from erie to buffalo), or between the cliff and the blue. azgeda exists more towards maine and massachussets. 

TODAY: 

after being away from her clan for many months, she finally needs to return to resupply and speak to her people and family before returning to move more south and east. however, shortly before she departs, a ship falls from the sky, blocking the route she took to journey to trikru territory. as ancient maps and current geography, she doesn’t know how to get back home, but this new clan from the sky may bring new answers that no dig has ever done.

Summary. Companion ‘verse. Nicolaus joins the Inquisition, offering his services as a merchant and a quartermaster’s aide. He soon proves himself indispensable, spending long nights working to balance the Inquisition’s budget, juggling trade contracts and merchants’ tempers with ease. An Inquisitor with high approval will quickly learn that he can juggle daggers as well as he numbers and trades as a talented assassin-class rogue. After the completion of his personal quests, The Price of a Crime and Blood or Water?, Nicolaus may offer to become a companion to the Inquisitor on their journeys. 

Personal quest. The links above provide a more full description of his personal quests. In summary, Nicolaus’ family arrives at Skyhold to offer their services as merchants. He has not seen them in years, having been left behind in a prison when he was falsely accused of smuggling. Nicolaus asks the Inquisitor to find out who the real smuggler was. The quests reveal that it was Althea, his younger sister, and that his parents knew and chose to protect her instead of Nico. The Inquisitor can choose to tell Nico who it was or not, as well as whether they wish to employ the Cadmus family, send them away, or employ them but ban them from Skyhold. Only sending them off or employing them away from Skyhold ( if Nico was told who the smuggler was ) will result in approval gains. If one of these two options is selected, Nicolaus can also be romanced, and will join the Inquisitor’s party as a companion.

Approval. Keep high approval with Nicolaus by speaking of the Inquisition as though it were a family and by focusing on practical matters rather than religion or leisure. Speak to him too much about religion or choose a resolution to his personal quest that he does not like and his approval will drop.

companion quest ;; Blood or Water?

The title of this quest refers to the phrase ‘blood of the covenant is stronger than water of the womb’ or, more simply, ‘blood is stronger than water’.

After having completed The Price of a Crime, the Inquisitor should talk to Nicolaus’ family. Dialogue options when speaking to Claudia Taxal, his mother, or Oraval Cadmus, his father, allow the Inquisitor to show them the proof they have that Althea was the one who should have been punished, not Nicolaus. Claudia is uncomfortable, but does not seem surprised. Oraval will sharply demand what right the Inquisitor has to pry into family matters. Both lead the Inquisitor to suspect that they knew Althea was guilty all along. 

Klava, the youngest child, and Jonan, the oldest son, have no dialogue options. If approached, they will each mention that Althea -- a mage -- was always Oraval’s favorite, as he was born in Tevinter and never got over his love of magic-users. Jonan will add that their parents would protect all of their children, but if a choice had to be made, he suspects they would choose Althea every time.

Speaking to Althea herself and confronting her with the proof will make her nervous and on the edge of tears. She seems genuinely remorseful, and begs the Inquisitor not to tell her youngest sister, Klava. Althea gives the Inquisitor a recipe for Nicolaus’ favorite soup, which she believes will serve as a peace offering. 

The Inquisitor can buy the ingredients off Nicolaus’ uncle at a very, very steep price or find them themselves. 

Returning with the ingredients to Althea triggers a cutscene in which she makes the soup and, followed at a distance by her family, approaches Nicolaus with it. If option A was selected in The Price of a Crime, he will ask her sharply where her kindness was when he was in prison. If option B was selected, Nicolaus will push the soup roughly away. 

In either case, a short cutscene argument follows between Nicolaus, who will begin to describe what it’s like to be branded a ‘Tevinter smuggler’ in a Fereldan prison, and his father, who cuts him off to list off all the very good reason reasons why the Inquisition would benefit from their trade -- which they wouldn’t have if they did anything to Althea. There are monetary perks for the Inquisitor to keep the Cadmus family in their employ. 

Three choices are then allowed: 

1. The Inquisitor tells Nicolaus he needs to forgive his family. He does, but this choice results in a ‘hardening’ of his character if option B was selected in the previous quest. He greatly disapproves either way. Members of the Cadmus family will stay in Skyhold after the quest, selling very rare items, as well as monetary perks.

2. The Inquisitor keeps the Cadmus family in their employ, but orders them not to come to Skyhold. If A was previously selected, Nicolaus’ approval will drop, and he will again accuse the Inquisitor of being ineffective and impotent. Only monetary perks are gained.

3. The Inquisitor says that it is not their place to punish Althea, but they do not wish to employ a family who would so easily lie and deceive, and that the family must leave. Nicolaus’ approval will go up greatly. This results in a ‘softening’ of his character if option B was previously chosen.

No monetary perks or rare item vendors are gained for the Inquisitor if choice 3 is selected, but during the quest’s closing dialogue, Nicolaus will offer to become a companion. If the Inquisitor wishes to pursue a relationship with Nico, either choice 3 ( and either A or B ) or 2B need to be selected. He will also arrange a 10% price drop at all merchant stalls within Skyhold.

companion quest ;; The Price of a Crime

Shortly after the Inquisition’s arrival at Skyhold, the Inquisitor can walk over to the merchants’ stalls to find Nicolaus in an argument with an older woman. If asked what the issue is, he will turn and storm off. Talking to the woman reveals that she is, in fact, Nicolaus’ mother. She and the rest of her merchant family have come to trade with the Inquisition, not expecting to find Nico there, but she does not want to agree to be recruited until she knows if her son approves.

After that conversation, the Inquisitor can speak to Nicolaus, who is pacing in the gardens. Dialogue options will reveal that he spent almost two years in prison for smuggling -- a crime he did not commit -- and that his family was obliged to leave without him. He asks the Inquisitor to find out who the real culprit was.

To do this, the Inquisitor should:

Speak to members of Nico’s family, who will all express grief and remorse at having lost him. His aunt will mention that Nico’s youngest sister, Althea, was acting suspicious around the time of the arrest.

Look in the Hinterlands for pages of Althea’s personal journal. There is proof in them that she was responsible and let her brother take the fall.

Return to Nicolaus. At this point, the Inquisitor may choose A. to lie and say no evidence was found or B. to tell him that the real smuggler was his sister. If A, Nicolaus’ approval will drop significantly, and he will ask what good an Inquisitor is for if all their inquisitions are as fruitless as this one. If B, he will demand that the Inquisitor punish Althea.

Regardless of which option is chosen, the second companion quest, Blood or Water?, will be triggered.
