In memoriam of Stephen Hawking, one of the brightest stars of our time, who died, or actually went beyond time, today 14/03/2018 at the age of 76.
One of the preoccupations Professor Hawking had was in regards to Artificial Intelligence (AI). Quoted from a 2016 speech, Professor Hawking said: 'I don't think advances in artificial intelligence will necessarily be benign.' And later on: 'Once machines reach a critical stage of being able to evolve themselves we cannot predict whether their goals will be the same as ours.'
According to Cambridge University’s centre for study of existential risk, which is dedicated to the understanding and mitigation of risks that could lead to human extinction or civilizational collapse, Hawking was on to something. In one of their recent studies (January 2018) AI wiping out humanity received the highest likelihood amongst all potential mankind exterminators. AI was colour coded red, (the highest danger level), whilst nanotechnology, pandemics, nuclear war and good old fashioned volcanic activity were rated way below.
Another study aptly named: The Malicious Use of Artificial Intelligence: Forecasting, Prevention, and Mitigation, warns against dangerous practices such as the one from South Korea which currently maintains the border with its northern neighbor using Samsung-built robot sentries that can fire a hale of bullets, with little conscious constraints.
So, what do you think? …Are we heading towards servitude to our robot overlords, are we to become a mere data memory? Let’s ask Alexa!!! Oh, wait according to this she’ll probably laugh it off:
