For my COM 240 lab, I decided to look at an infographic about World War II 7 decades later. The data is taken from the US Department of Defense, the US Census Bureau, American Community Survey as well as the University of Minnesota Online Data Analysis System. I would say the infographic is accurately displaying the data in a not too complex way and organizes it into several different categories. Displaying the info via bar graphs is the preattentitive attribute that is aiding data comprehension. Using bar graphs is a pretty safe investment that the reader will understand your information especially with large numbers. It’s a pretty standard looking infographic. It works well under its design principles and sticks under a basic color scheme. -- -- -- This infographic effectively and ethically displays its information gathered.

This info graphic is from the United States Census. The overall aim of the info graphic is to inform citizens how they can help our government create a better America by conducting feedback and suggestions on various topics. I believe that the info graphic is very colorful and interesting to look at but it is very wordy and can loose a persons attention quick. I also think that it does serve its purposes and get the message across, i just do not think that people will sit there and read everything it is said. Maybe a graph would be better effective than just a chart with a lot of words. With every topic that is mentioned there is a visual attached to it which goes along with the the topic and i think that they ate visually appealing and creative. It is cool that the pictures to the right of the info graphic all correlate with each other and connect. I believe there is chart junk it is just too wordy. Overall, if it was less wordy then it will be an effective info graphic.

I chose the guide to recycling as my infographic. I chose this particular one because I thought the marketing side of it was well done and so was the data. I like how they chose to put the data in a sentence rather than a chart. I feel like it is more likely for people to read the data about recycling if it is written out rather than someone having to stare at the chart and try and figure out the numbers that way. I think doing it that way conveys the information in a easier effective way.

I have always been interested in recycling so I thought this infographic was awesome because the design of it was nice and easy to understand. Especially if you aren’t familiar with recycling.

A few preattentive attributes would include color because it involved a lot of different colors (hue.) I am more interested in looking at something when there are pretty colors involved. Also, position is used because your eyes go from the right to the left side of the screen (movement) in which it engages us as readers.

I thought the design aspect was brilliant and I really enjoyed how the information popped up as you scrolled down. The reason I think it is brilliant is because it involves “movement” where the eyes go from one step of recycling to the next and so on. In this infographic, I did not see any “chartjunk” because I think all the info they used was necessary. I also thought the design was elegant and accurate because the data was nicely arranged, it was efficient in using space, clearly offers context, and I don’t think the data was misrepresented.

I thought this infographic was effective and ethically conveys information that is useful for us to know. I thought the overall design process was nicely put!
