Happy Halloween!Â
I chose NPR.org as a website with both design and accessibility. The site itself has a nice sense of direction as you scroll towards the bottom of the page you can click on articles relating to different topics such as politics, world news, or entertainment while still being conveniently at the top of the page. The site keeps a modern white background and the logo and the local affiliate is nested at the top of the page as well. The links to the for easy consumption for any age group.
COM 240 Photo Critiques
Since I was a amateur photographer for about 10 minutes after my COM 240 class.
I’m lucky to have a Galaxy S6 for pretty pristine photos at face value.
1.)
ISU Bell: this one, admittedly is not too exciting and is a little too immediate but I took it to satisfy the assignment requirements
Quad Panoramic: This one is probably my favorite (despite feeling like a stalker for taking it). This one captures the rule of thirds quite nicely and the couple are wearing bright clothes which makes them stand out. Fun fact: that’s about the same distance I like to keep when my friends are displaying their PDAs
Light Post: This one was obviously my medium shot. Composition-wise, everything works nicely here but its generally not too exciting. I think working with the lighting settings in Photoshop would make it more interesting.
Flowers: This was a close up shot. The flowers have a nice hue to them which makes it stand out amongst the dirt. Once again, rule of thirds is in effect.
2.)
I think the average person would take away that this is university of some sorts as everything is planned out in a way of luscious greenery and sophisticated looking buildings.
My Panoramic one could either be used for that one mini monument that reads: “For those who fell in love at ISU” or a Hallmark Card. I will happily take the royalty checks Hallmark!
The photos posted are a brief glimpse of ISU on the beginning days of springtime, with various types of shots such as wide establishing shots, medium range and close up shots.

We Tried To Throw A Rock At This Boat

For my COM 240 lab, I decided to look at an infographic about World War II 7 decades later. The data is taken from the US Department of Defense, the US Census Bureau, American Community Survey as well as the University of Minnesota Online Data Analysis System. I would say the infographic is accurately displaying the data in a not too complex way and organizes it into several different categories. Displaying the info via bar graphs is the preattentitive attribute that is aiding data comprehension. Using bar graphs is a pretty safe investment that the reader will understand your information especially with large numbers. It’s a pretty standard looking infographic. It works well under its design principles and sticks under a basic color scheme. -- -- -- This infographic effectively and ethically displays its information gathered.
Out of Milton Glaser works, I decided to choose the Mad Men logo not just because I’m a fan of the show, but it poses very interesting design elements and principles.
The piece has good space between the logo, collage and the man. The collage offers a lot of shapes that stimulates the eyes.
One obvious principle is Contrast. I like to think the colors represent the creative ideas Mad Men had back in the 60s and the black and white silhouette represents the corporate sophisticated work culture Don Draper and many others embodied. Another principle is proportion. The colorful collage takes up most of the page yet one can perceive that these pitches or ideas come from one person.
The logo itself is using a very basic sans serif type. The letters are big and bold and spells itself out quite nicely, but I think its the least interesting aspect of this piece.
As someone who’s a fan of psychedelic artwork, this is mesmerizing. There’s all sorts of primary colors as well as complementary colors for variety. I think the color represents the luxury (at the time) of being able to print things in color.
@isuviscom
Today I found an example of Sans Serif typeface. This sign is clearly some sort of PSA so a neutral font works in being as clear as possible (as I am quietly typing this... shhh...)
Its a decent example of typography. I don’t necessarily think that the text needed to be centered but I’m sure its going for a crucial message over aesthetics.
I chose this vintage Zenith ad because it used a lot of interesting design principles. I feel this ad has a lot of movement from the clever use of emulating a pamphlet of sorts, how each product jumps down to the next until it shifts upward at the bottom of the page. The ketchup red and mustard yellow make for a good contrast too.
Amateur hour:
Culprit #1 is an example of stair stepping. Stair stepping is a method of trying to  fill the space by visually stair stepping chosen elements down a page. The header, Normal Computer Solutions comes tumbling down the stairs in a bush league effort to fill out a page. The flyer does work from top to bottom however
Culprit #2
This is an example of trapped negative space, which is when extra space is pushed to the edges of a layout. This is an example because of the huge black boarders pushing the white space too close to the middle.
Tank Man is one of those rare phenomenons captured that has more than a thousand words to usually describe an ordinary picture. Its a photo that represents the power of one sole entity standing against injustice. While we may never know who this person actually was/is... I think its an image that provokes people to speak out against regimes. This photo also makes me realize that not every nation has free speech and that I’m fortunate enough to have a distinct voice. The example definitely falls into the Ethics of Meaning context of the things discussed in the class. For one, you can see the David vs. Goliath imagery between the positioning of the two objects in the photo.
For the current COM 240 assignment, I chose a moment from arguably one of the funniest shows from the past few years, Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia.
Similes and metaphors are devices that show a similar comparison between two objects.
In the episode “The Gang Buys a Boat” Dee gets mocked for having dancing skills comparable to a giant inflatable dancing tube thing often seen at a used car dealership to lure in customers. With her strikingly similar moves to the object, one could argue that she dances like the tube or she is the tube thing, emphasizing that it’s a simile.  Plus it’s funny at how accurate it is.
Visual Literacy White Paper
The readings for todays class provided good groundwork for the rudimentary concepts of Visual Communication. Visual Literacy is something that we learn as we get older and our brains are more fined to what we perceive as aesthetically appealing.Â
One passage that caught me in particular was the passage that said that “we live in an era of visual culture, which influences our attitudes, beliefs, values and life-style”. Two strong examples are places such as Times Square or Piccadilly Circus. Our eyes are bombarded with images from logos to bright lights.
Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd, Piccadilly Circus, 1967
As bright as their clothes are, one can’t escape the vast amount of logos behind them.
