I have a definite interest in getting my major in meteorology, but im not sure what are the best colleges to go to. And did you do any internships or anything before you went to college?
Hi there! A lot of this answer is kinda tailored to people who want to study in the United States (Sorry, but I don’t have experience elsewhere).
The best college is the one that you believe you will thrive the most in.
Don’t stress out about going to the “best” college in society’s standards; choose a school that meets your needs and wants. I, for example, wanted a school that had a solid meteorology program and did undergraduate research. Try to figure out your priorities, do some research, and then make a match. If you need a starting point, here’s a list of meteorology schools, most of which meet National Weather Service requirements, that has other important information as well.
I highly recommend doing college visits if you are able to. When I was in high school, I was stuck between two universities. What solidified my decision in this was a college visit, which allowed me to see what colleges met my needs and priorities.
Now, I NEVER interned or job-shadowed before college. I can guarantee that most internships in meteorology require at least some sort of experience beforehand, such as having taken a certain class (usually general meteorology) or a achieving a year classification (typically sophomore or junior in college). However, if you are interested in broadcast meteorology, some news stations will allow you to come in for a day or two to job-shadow, or see what the job is like first-hand which can give you an idea if that is the field of meteorology you’re interest in.
I heavily prepared for meteorology in high school. Meteorology is based almost entirely on physics and calculus, so it would be extremely wise to take these courses in high school so you won’t be completely lost in college.
Hopefully this helped! If you have any other questions or need advice, I’m here for you!
