And then there were two
for such a long time we were all talking about stenmark’s record and that magical number of 86 wins, and since today there’s no stenmark’s record anymore, from now on it’s shiffrin’s record and it will only grow
and stenmark’s record was hanging up there for so long, so high, so unreachable, and lindsay was so close but she didn’t make it, but we all already knew that mika is gonna do it one day. and that day finally came.
let that sink in.
Ingemar Stenmark, IK Fjällvinden, Tärnaby
Världsmästare 1978 i slalom och storslalom
World Champion 1978 in giant slalom and slalom
Weltmeister 1978 im Riesenslalom und Slalom
I absolutely adore what Mästarnas Mästare did bringing back Ingemar’s wall jump, and how they managed to showcase just what a feat it was.
Like here we have Ingemar Stenmark, 54 years old at the time and over 2 decades away from his active career, jumping straight up onto a 126 centimeter high wall. And he makes it look easy.
Then 9 years later the show brings the jump back as an actual challenge for one of their most impressive groups of champions of all time. And they get nowhere close.
Like they had two of his fellow alpine skiiers, Frida Hansdotter and Henrik Windstedt, both considerably younger at 34 and 36 years old and both fresh out of their active careers, Frida having quit just a few months earlier. And they just barely scrape by at 106 centimeter. That’s a whole 2 decimeters below Ingemar’s jump. Same goes for footballer Kim Källström, at 37 and 2 years retired, who had to scramble to get to that height.
Then you had Michel Tornéus, professional long jumper, who had literally just ended his career at 33 years old days before landing in Greece to start competing. And he only managed to clear a 116 centimeter jump. On his second try.
And here was just Ingemar Stenmark, already a legend in so many ways clearly, but still, 54 years old and 21 years away from his active career, just doing this jump like it was nothing after his morning run just for fun.
Ingemar is a part of Mästarnas Mästare’s own mythology these days right along with Frida now due to her record long wall sit, and damn I love my alpine skiiers, and rightfully so.
Lindsey Vonn gets World Cup win No. 77 in second race after injuries
Lindsey Vonn is back on top in just the second race of her comeback from a knee injury and a broken arm.
The American edged defending overall World Cup champion Lara Gut to win a downhill event in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, on Saturday and claim career victory No. 77, moving her within nine wins of the record held by Ingemar Stenmark.
After finishing 0.15 seconds ahead of Swiss rival Gut and 0.48 ahead of Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany, Vonn collapsed to the snow in celebration and shed tears of joy.
not gonna lie i secretly hoped Ingemar would appear for award ceremony 🙈
my word that would have been iconic! can you imagine how emotional mika would have been 🥹🥹🥹
