"Historically in Filipino culture, hair was seen as an ornament to be taken care of. Both men and women would grow their hair long and decorate it with flowers. Hair care involved both perfumes and oils. Sesame seed and coconut oils, as well as aloe vera, were used to encourage growth. A perfume called "bulat" or ambergris, civet, and musk excretions could be used to add fragrance to the hair. This photograph titled "Woman of the Upper Class" was taken in the Philippines in 1875 by Francisco van Camp."
