If you listen closely “Friends on the Other Side” from Princess and the Frog, there are 2 distinct voices in the chorus during Naveen’s transformation at the end. There’s a male voice who sings “you got what you wanted!” and that’s replied with “but you lost what you had!” in a female voice.
I didn’t realize it until now, but that voice sounds a lot like Mama Odie’s. Why would her voice come up in Facilier’s song? Why would she be the voice of reason to point out that in his gain of power, he lost everything he had previous? True, Mama Odie is his opposition in the magical dichotomy, but why would she care about Facilier’s past and his gain of power? So I decided to look at the Disney wiki to see if there are any answers and I found this:
[transcript: “In an earlier script, Dr Facilier would not just be a dark wizard who wants to conquer New Orleans with the help of his friends, he would have been Mama Odie’s son, who followed the path of the dark arts unlike his mother. In this same script, there was to be a showdown between the two of them, which would have converged into a major battle during the Mardi Gras.”]
So 1) Dr Facilier is Mama Odie’s son, 2) everything makes sense, 3) I won’t forgive Disney for not giving us an epic mother vs son magical showdown in the middle of Mardi Gras, and 4) I want to see Mama Odie’s reaction to seeing her son get dragged to Hell for not fulfilling his promises, or see any other possible outcomes that would keep Facilier alive at the end of the film and reunite him with Mama Odie.
