It's a fun, quick read which my deeply feminist mind just could not fall entirely in love with. Now, don't get me wrong, there was a good mix of humour and romance in the book and I will admit I do not remember much of the source material to really compare and contrast, and yet... There was something so disheartening about seeing our protagonist/Shrew/vinegar girl Kate go from being so strong and independent to waxing poetic about how men have it hard too. I am a sucker for romantic moments, and vehemently believe you can be strong/independent AND in love/in a relationship/vulnerable but there seemed to be no chemistry whatsoever between Kate and Pyotr which made the idea of them actually falling in love seem far-fetched. I can pinpoint one, maybe two moments where I understood her shift. But considering the length of the book, everything seemed to happen too quickly. Overall, Vinegar Girl is a good retelling, a nice light read for the beach or lounging in the park on a nice sunny day. Just don’t expect too much depth from it. • 📚 Bookstagram Challenges: #lilcolorblast (purple, black, and green) - @lifeinlit & @beccasbookishlife #allthebooksapril (fave siblings) - Nik and Ella • 📸: @farrimmah (at Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates)
