The Union Crematorium was Jochebed’s home, so to speak, she was the only person that was adequately equipped to handle the town’s dead. She didn’t know why anyone else could not be trained to help her, didn’t ever question it. Either way she thought it to be odd that no one ever took the time to properly mourn their dead, they just handed them off to her so she could assure they were properly taken care of before they went on their way. Jochebed didn’t understand that in a place like Union…mourning had no place, at least not as things currently stood.
“Hello?” her thin lips pulled into a frown as she glanced toward the entrance to the crematory. It was late at night, yes, but her job was not one with set hours. Death could happen at any time, because of that she had to be prepared for a call whenever someone’s time came. Still, she had been ready to conclude that she was still alone…before her eyes caught a flash of white, “please come out! Or I’m calling the police.”
